Left Lane: Jirka Kaplan Runs 5.974/229.53/-1.096, Now #1; AA/AM Index: 7.07, Prior Best: 8.865/88.57/1.795, Was #12
Right Lane: Mike McKeigue Runs 7.849/140.88/-0.111, Now #3; C/AA Index: 7.96, Prior Best: 7.312/186.14/-0.648, Was #2

Kaplan is looking to make it more than 200ft before the belt comes off. WOW! The shot heard round the world as Kaplan goes into the 5's that is first ever Comp car to run in the 5's in the history of NHRA.

Nice, like to see a back up on that so it gets in the book! ;)However...., that can be a double edged sword:eek:-wonder what it did to the class index?

Comp,

Ya GOTTA love it!

A STREET driven 6 second 200 mph Comp car @ Topeka last week, and Jirka goes into the 5's this week.

CONGRATS Jirka!

Unk

Jirka was kicking everyone's ass in nostalgia for a short time and everyone sh*t talked him, so he got fed up and left. So he will now concentrate on kicking ass in Comp Eliminator....Great run Jirka!!!!

Comp class indexes are only subject to change in eliminations.

You can run as quick as you like in qualifying!

Jirka will have to back that number up in eliminations, which will trigger a CIC round penalty/event penalty & then theirs that little issue of lowering the national index. It's that double edged sword thing:eek: I was talking about;)

However, being a national record holder is one heck of an accomplishment!:D

F.Y.I. For those not familar with how Competition Eliminator works:

Each class has a national index and that index is used for setting the field in qualifying and stagering the start in eliminations.

During qualifying the amount you run under your index sets the field. The #1 qualifier is the car that ran farthest under it's index and then down through the line. During the race if you run 0.55 under your index your index will get dropped by 0.05 seconds for that race. If you run 0.60 under the index your index will get hit for the entire year. Your index can get adjusted more than once in a race and in a year. That is how the system keeps a killer combo from running away from the pack.

During the race the index sets the stagger at the tree then it's a first to the stripe for the victory. It is a full run class.

It can turn in to a bracket race of sorts many times though. Often you will see the top dogs on the brakes at the stripe because their car is capable of running well under the index and they are trying to "save" their index from getting adjusted. You will see many guys "backing" in to their opponet so they can win by the slimest margin and avoid adjusting the index. By doing that they know the car has more left if they cut a bad light or run another ultra-quick car.

;)

Mission has been known for Quick times for years, but this is quite impressive! I wonder what size motor he runs!

Like this right Mark. This was 2nd round today in Belle Rose, LA

Car#-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET-- Speed-----Car#-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET-- Speed
226A Lee Adkins 4065 Chase Williams
E2 ****WINNER**** 0.075 6.192 217.18 0.023 7.802 174.12
A/PM Index: 6.86 (+/-): -0.668 E/A Index: 8.29 (+/-): -0.488
Qualified: #1 6.169 -0.691

1:02 p.m. Adkins gets the win but will take a permanent CIC adjustment to his index.

He took a hit in the 3rd round.

Car#-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET-- Speed-----Car#-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET-- Speed
226A Lee Adkins 2467 Jim Kimbrough
E3 0.079 6.182 217.28 ****WINNER**** 0.015 7.062 189.28
A/PM Index: 6.70 (+/-): -0.518 C/DA Index: 7.56 (+/-): -0.498
Lee Adkins took a 0.16 CIC penalty in the last round. Kimbrough gets the holeshot and starts to pull away. Adkins started making up ground quickly, started moving around pretty good near the end of the run and couldn't run down Kimbrough

Yes Armand, thats a double hit for Adkins. One to his national class index :rolleyes:and one for the round violation index penalty (CIC=Competition Index Control). That's a stinger and not what you want to do. If one keeps doing that they'll put their combination out of business for the class!

;)

Unfortunately Jirka lost in the final to Jeff Lane. :(

Yes & No! Jirka lost the race, but he saved his Index. It's a careful balance in Comp. Eliminator, if you look below Jirka was doing his best to win, but not hurt himself and his combination with national class Index hit, (he was in and out of the throttle as to win, but not go to fast!):

Car#-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET-- Speed-----Car#-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET-- Speed
600 Jeff Lane 6180 Jirka Kaplan
E4 ****WINNER**** 0.037 8.079 166.23 0.018 6.540 173.64
B/SMA Index: 8.59 (+/-): -0.511 AA/AM Index: 7.01 (+/-): -0.470
Prior rounds:
E3 (C Plaizier ) 0.021 8.604 -0.026 (B Perkin ) 0.093 7.118 0.108
E2 (R Harrison ) 0.028 8.090 -0.520 (B Huhtala ) 0.030 6.508 -0.562
E1 (A Bowdish ) 0.031 8.102 -0.528 (R Warter ) 0.022 8.967 1.897
Qualified: #6 8.044 -0.586 #1 5.974 -1.096

Jeff Lane has a 0.04 CIC penalty; Jirka Kaplan has a 0.06 CIC penalty.
Kaplan cuts a great light but he is on and off the throttle trying not to hit the index and that gave Lane the chance to drive around him. Lane will take the win. Jeff Lane's MOV: 0.0226 seconds (approximately 6 feet).

Sometimes winning in comp. is saving/preserving your competitive class combination for as long as you can. It would not be wise to go to fast and sabatoge your own class national index. Then you have to change class and combination to be competitive again, that gets to be a lot of work and $$$$$$$ .;):)

Hence the reason it's called "complicated eliminator". Whenever anyone gives me a hard time about Super class racing, I say "when you figure out Comp, come back and we'll talk". :)

Ever since NHRA no longer penalizes racers for going more than .60 under in qualifying, they can tear it up in qualifying! I remember around 1992 in Gainesville, Randy Ross in a BB/A ran .73 under and got penalized .15 to his index!

I remember in E-Town '03, some gal driving a G/D ran like .85 under! That the most I have ever seen in Comp!

Comp class indexes are only subject to change in eliminations.

You can run as quick as you like in qualifying!

DG

Actually, I believe under new rules this year, they will adjust class indexes up or down if there are numbers to support it. H/EA was recently adjusted up .20. My guess is that AA/AM will see a downward adjustment of at least .10.
