BAYTOWN, TX (Mar. 8, 2008) — A record-setting crowd of more than 40,000 witnessed the stars of the Flowmaster American Drag Racing League (ADRL) presented by the National Guard go after a $100,000 purse Mar. 8, in the ADRL’s season-opening Drag Illustrated Dragpalooza IV at Houston Raceway Park. Joshua Hernandez of nearby Conroe, TX, won the ADRL’s marquee Pro Extreme class, while Jim Halsey prevailed in Pro Nitrous, reigning class champ Steve Gorman won in Extreme 10.5, and Ron Procopio won his career-first Pro Extreme Motorcycle event.
“I knew he left first, but then I caught him pretty fast,” Hernandez said after going 3.96 seconds at 191.57 miles per hour over the eighth-mile course to defeat fellow Texan Steve Wiley. “I think he had some trouble about half-track and that’s when I passed him.”
Halsey also had to come from behind off the start to beat Randy Weatherford with a 4.03-seconds pass at 183.62 mph. “I was gaining on him, but I wasn’t really sure I would catch up,” Halsey said. “It was very, very close at the finish line.”
In Extreme 10.5, which refers to the cars’ relatively narrow 10.5-inch-wide rear slicks, Gorman and opponent David Janes made identical 4.41-seconds runs, but Gorman got the win again based on his better reaction time at the start. “It was one of those deals where I knew I’d have to get him on the (starting) tree,” the former commercial pilot said. “Fortunately, that worked out just great for me, not so great for him.”
In just his second ADRL national event, Procopio ran 4.33 seconds at 160.54 mph to handily defeat T.T. Jones in the final round of Pro Extreme Motorcycle action. “My crew chief made a few changes right before that run and to be honest, I wasn’t so sure about them, but it turns out he was right and I had nothing to worry about,” he said.
The ADRL returns to action Apr. 25-26, with the 2nd annual Shelor.com Spring Drags at Tulsa Raceway Park in Tulsa , OK .
