<p>(9-20-2008)Josh Hernandez drove the Team Rage '68 Camaro to the provisional top qualifying spot in the JEGS ProMod Challenge at the O'Reilly Super Start Batteries NHRA Fall Nationals, and soundly set both ends of the Texas Motorplex track record in the process.
The Houston-area resident delivered consistent sub-six second runs, blasting to a 5.964/242.02 in the heat of the day and backing it up with a 5.973/241.54 in the evening session.
"What can I say about this Oddy and Critchley horsepower," Hernandez exclaimed. "Dave and Jim Oddy along with Troy Critchley have built such an amazing machine, it runs fast in the heat and when it's cool - these guys are geniuses!
"We're all working hard this weekend to take home a win here in our home state, and so far, we've had the consistent numbers to prove we've got what it takes to get that done," he said.
Hernandez said his focus was split yesterday as funeral services were held in Shandon, Ohio for fallen friend and driver Steve Engel.
"It was a tough day, because all of us as drivers and racers were thinking of Tonya [Engel] and the boys, sending our thoughts and prayers to them as we went through the day. We'll all work our way to find some peace in this loss, but for now, it's still very raw," he said.
Reigning world champion Josh Hernandez collected his fifth Ohio Crankshaft Low Qualifier Award of the 2008 JEGS ProMod Challenge Saturday morning at the Texas Motorplex and promptly donated the $1,000 bonus to a special project chassis builder Tim McAmis has started.
In the wake of fellow Pro Mod racer Steve Engel's untimely death following his accident in Indianapolis earlier this month, McAmis launched an initiative to build a better Pro Mod chassis. Many of the drivers in the JEGS ProMod Challenge are backing the project and Hernandez decided to hand over his low qualifier check to help the cause.
"We're all hurting this weekend without Steve," Hernandez said. "His accident prompted Tim to go out and hire an engineer, at his own expense, to figure out how he can make safer racecars. It's similar to the Eric Medlen Project in Funny Car in that we're all in this together, regardless of sponsors or car types or chassis builders, to make the sport better. We can't have people dying out here.
"Tim said from the start that he'll share all of the information and data this engineer and the rest of his staff discover with everyone. I think that's the spirit of cooperation we need and donating this check is the least we can do."
