CHARLOTTE, N.C. (June 15, 2010) – Veteran Top Fuel drag racer Doug Herbert will compete in the upcoming NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals in Bristol, Tenn., with the Mail Terminal Services “MAIL FROM HOME” Program / B.R.A.K.E.S. Dragster.
After not competing full time over the past two years, Herbert is excited to return to the track where he has won six times. He will promote the “MAIL FROM HOME” Program, which honors the service personnel in the war zones of Afghanistan and Iraq. Mail Terminal Services, through its partnership with the US Post Office, receives, sorts and packages all of the mail going to the war zones of Afghanistan and Iraq.
“Doug is committed to honoring military service personnel,” said Rodger Comstock, President of Mail Terminal Services. “His sister and brother-in-law have both served overseas, so he knows how tough it can be for service men and women to be away from home. Doug is a strong competitor that needs to be out racing on the NHRA National Event Circuit. I’m glad that we’re able to help him do that this weekend in Bristol.”
Herbert last competed in March at zMAX Dragway, where he went to the finals in the Inaugural NHRA Four-Wide Nationals. In last year’s race at Bristol Dragway Herbert had a consistent car and earned the No. 8 qualifying position, but fell in the first round to Doug Kalitta.
“It’ll be great to have the ‘MAIL FROM HOME’ Program on the car at Bristol,” said Herbert, who scored his first Top Fuel win at Thunder Valley. “I’ve been good friends with the Comstocks for many years. It will be fun to be back at Bristol. I love racing there.”
Herbert will also continue to spread the message of safe and responsible driving through his racing by featuring B.R.A.K.E.S. on his dragster. In addition to holding the B.R.A.K.E.S. Teen Pro-Active Driving School in North Carolina, the organization is now conducing schools in California as well, thanks to support from the NHRA and K&N Filters. B.R.A.K.E.S. will provide hands on training to more than 1,200 teenage drivers this year.
B.R.A.K.E.S. has partnered with the Bristol chapter of Speedway Children’s Charities to conduct a fundraiser during the NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals. Race fans can support both charities by making a two dollar donation to receive a B.R.A.K.E.S. wristband. The wristbands will be available at the B.R.A.K.E.S. booth in the manufacturer’s midway.
There will be a “MAIL FROM HOME” kiosk in Doug Herbert’s Top Fuel Dragster pit area (in addition to Jack Beckman’s Funny Car pit area and Army Interactive) so that NHRA fans can send messages of support to the US troops. So stop by to say ‘Hi’ to a US service person and show you care.
The public, schools and service organizations are welcome to participate in the “MAIL FROM HOME” Program by sending their name, organization name and number of post cards needed to [email protected]. They may also submit names of friends and family serving in the war zones that they would like to receive a box, by sending the service person’s name and APO number to the same email address.
With the cards collected this season, Mail Terminal Services’ “MAIL FROM HOME” Program will have sent almost half a million post cards of support to troops in the war zones.
