BRAINERD, Minn. -- Doug Herbert and the SnaponFranchise.com Top Fuel team fell to Doug Kalitta in the first round of eliminations on Sunday in Brainerd, Minn. during the Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals.
Round One:
Herbert, the No. 5 qualifier, was matched against No. 12 qualifier Doug Kalitta for the first round of eliminations at Brainerd International Raceway. The SnaponFranchise.com dragster had too much power for the track and lost the round with an ET of 3.980 to Kalitta's 3.972.
The car was fast off the line but started spinning the tires about 2.6 seconds into the run. The dragster then began to drop cylinders and Kalitta was able to catch Herbert at the top end of the race track.
"Man that was a rough loss," said Herbert. "Doug's a good guy, I'm happy for him but we wanted that win today. We'll just have to get back at it next weekend. We really need to go some rounds in Reading and make sure these guys don't catch us in the points."
Herbert remains eighth in the 2008 NHRA POWERade Championship points standings. Kalitta moved up to ninth but is 106 points behind the Snap-on team with two events remaining before the Countdown begins.
The next race for the SnaponFranchise.com Top Fuel dragster is next weekend, Aug. 14-17, in Reading, Pa. at Maple Grove Raceway for the Toyo Tire NHRA Nationals.
