Nitro Member

Gary Wolkwitz resets the SS/AH record to 8.229 @ 160.56. Took place at the Orlando Speed World Dragway, February 14, 2015. NHRA Southeast Division Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series.

Impressive. My buddies Chuck and Steve Comella run that class. The big wheel stands seem to be getting smaller, I hope that's a trend that doesn't continue...

Any good high horsepower super stocker that has a scienced out chassis doesn't need to leave with a 5 foot wheelstand. Just remember , when you're going UP ...you're not going FORWARD!

I've never understood (nor believed) that wheelies didn't scrub-off speed and/or E.T. and, yet, most folks in this class seem to do it. Is there "scientific" support - one way or the other?

This could tie in with the "show vs performance" thread. It's the exact same thing. As the Hemi cars get closer to running 8.0s, I'm sure the wheelies will become much smaller. It's all about efficiency. Same reason we don't have 1000 ft burnouts, dry hops and throttle whacks. They just aren't the most efficient means to ultimate performances any longer. So while performances improve, some of the show is lost.

"The Hemi Darts and Barracudas decimated competition in the SS/A division pulling consistent 10.30 elapsed times at 135 mph, right off the trailer. Forty years later their factory performance still remains unmatched." There's a lot of trickery going on to knock off 2 seconds of ET.....if you know what I mean

You mean like 40 years worth of horsepower gains? In '71 my dad's A/A was running 8.50s and he held the national record at 163+. 44 years later, Alan Ellis runs 6.50s and is over 160 at half track in his A/A. It's not trickery as much as pure horsepower. Modern SS/AH cars are close to 1000 hp.

Nunzio, did your dad have a name on his A/A. I raced in Denver Div 5 race in 86 and pitted next to a A/A roadster called Pappay's Pride man that thing was quick.

Nah, he was done by the early '70s. His car was the Mind Sticker. You're thinking of Tom Snyder's car, which was very fast and I believe a national event winner. I think Tom raced that car up until a few years ago.

The rules have been changed a lot since '68. Stock suspension, no tubs, stock intake manifold, no porting, cams and valvetrain had to be "stock". Plus the tracks were not prepared. These engines are like competition
eliminator powerplants now except for the smaller carb limit.

The weather helped quite a bit too. I was looking and the density altitude ranged between 13 feet above sea level to nearly 700 feet below sea level on Friday of this event.
