[coverattach=1]Driver of ’57 Chevy ready for more Quick 32 Sportsman Series action:
“It’s been a busy summer. I’m going to go back to racing now.”
WARTBURG, ONTARIO (August 27, 2009) – Scott Wildgust has not had a great season so far in the Quick 32 Sportsman Series presented by NAPA Auto Parts.
But the Wartburg, Ontario driver of the 1957 Chevy plans to improve his standings in the next event.
“I’m hoping we can turn things around,” said Wildgust. “So far, it’s been go fast and loose first round.”
But Wildgust, who was one of the originators of the new Quick 32 Sportsman Series, has been busy working behind the scenes with the series. He was also busy during the last event August 15-16 at the Grand Bend Motorplex for two reasons: he had to attend a wedding, and he was one of the main forces behind the Stratford Day Spectacular, one of the track’s biggest and best-attended annual events.
“Don’t count me out,” he continued. “I’m poised to win. It’s just been a busy summer what with the Stratford Day event and the wedding.
“I’m going to go back to racing now that the Stratford Day is over.”
A former Pro Modified Racing Association competitor, Wildgust and the ’57 Chevy are certainly capable of good numbers. In the opening round, he qualified the J&J Roth Racing car number one with a 6.893-seconds, 199.43-mph pass, number one at the second race with a 6.74 and at the third event, at Grand Bend, he posted a 4.355-second, 166.45-mph run on the eighth-mile to qualify in number two spot. Unfortunately, he was eliminated during first-round action on the Top Sportsman side of the Quick 32 Sportsman Series.
He also mentioned the car is using a Lenco Drive automatic transmission, something he has had to learn after years of three-speed manual Lenco gearboxes.
“The car has been great,” Wildgust mentioned. “I want to convey a special thanks to the Roths (Jim and Jeff Roth, of Kitchener, team owners), who have supplied a great car. They have given us a good consistent car, and it’s a good opportunity for us.”
The bright yellow ’57 is powered by a supercharged 526-cubic inch Alan Johnson engine, which sits in the Tim McAmis chassis. The car uses a Lenco automatic transmission. Crew members include Joe McCann and John Weima, with special thanks to wife Stacey and Junior crew members Avery and Sienna Wildgust.
While his numbers have not been great as of yet, Wildgust said he has been impressed overall with the inaugural season of the Quick 32 Sportsman Series.
“This has been a great series,” noted the former dragster and alcohol Funny Car driver, who placed second in the 2007 PMRA season. “There is lots of professionalism in the series. Thanks to everyone who has been supporting it, and will continue to do so in the future.”
Next event for Wildgust and the J&J Roth Racing Team sponsored by Oak Grove Cheese, NGK Spark Plugs and Monster Racing Fuels will be the fourth round in the series, the Teamsters Canada Thunder by the Beach Weekend presented by Rudy Held's Performance Center September 5-6 at the Grand Bend Motorplex.
The Teamsters Canada Thunder by the Beach Weekend presented by Rudy Held's Performance Centre will be featuring the "Night of Nitro" Nitro Funny car Match races between IHRA World Champion Dale Creasy Jr. and Canadian star Jason Duschene, plus Nostalgia Alcohol Funny cars and the Fourth Annual - PMRA Challenge, Pro Modified Racing Association. This high-profile event will take place Saturday and Sunday, September 5-6 at the Grand Bend Motorplex in Grand Bend, Ontario.
The weekend will also include the popular Quick 32 Sportsman Series, Quick 32 Sportsman Series, presented by NAPA Auto Parts, featuring Top Dragster and Top Sportsman action all weekend with exciting six and seven-second race cars.
Highlights Saturday night will include the Nitro Funny Car Match Race, the 210-miles per hour Extreme Machine Jet Kenworth, and Geoff Pollard’s 230-miles per hour Top Fuel Drag Bike starting at 6:00 p.m.
Also on tap will be the Grand Bend Motorplex Top Dragster and Top Sportsman Series and some great racing action in the Thunder series and Junior programs, all topped off by our biggest Fireworks show of the year on Saturday night.
There will be three qualifying sessions on Saturday, September 5 starting at 3:30 p.m. and the championship eliminations will begin Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
