Radford, VA--Matt Hagan returned home from Rockingham Dragway late last night, still on an adrenaline high from winning his first ever national event. Hagan competed this weekend in the Spring Nationals Knoll Gas Nitro Jam and won the Nitro Funny Car division. This was Hagan's first win of the season, his first win in the Nitro Funny Car Class, and his first ever win on the national scene.
Although this is Hagan's 3rd season of IHRA competition he is a newcomer to the Nitro Funny Car class, having just made the transition from the Pro Modified division after last season. This weekend at Rockingham Hagan qualified into the field of veteran funny car drivers on Saturday and made his way through the elimination rounds on Sunday to his final match up with Paul Lee.
Hagan's run against Lee wasn't perfect as both drivers were fighting a damp track. Hagan started out behind but caught Lee by half track and sailed across the finish line ahead of Lee by a car length.

"I was cheering in the car but I didn't see the win light. When I got out and everybody was running over to the us with the cameras, that's when I knew. It's super, super fast. Your mind is playing catch up all the time, but now I'm beginning to feel really comfortable in the car."
This win will surely give the rookie NFC team an infusion of confidence and momentum as they continue to compete throughout the season in IHRA national events.
