LAS VEGAS - Saving his best run for the final qualifying session, Greg Anderson, driver of the KB Racing LLC, Summit Racing Equipment Pontiac GTO, moved up to third on the final qualifying ladder, setting a track record speed at the eighth annual SummitRacing.com NHRA Nationals.
During the first day of qualifying, Anderson quickly took over the top spot in the first qualifying session, only to fall to fifth after the second session when clutch problems beset his Summit Racing Pontiac.
His first run on Saturday didn't offer any improvement, but then came a wake up notice to all his competitors for tomorrow. The three-time Pro Stock champ blasted The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway quarter-mile in 6.737 seconds at 205.26 mph. It was the quickest and fastest run of the final session.
"It was a good run. We carried the wheels like the jelly bean guy," said Anderson, referring to Ed "the Outlaw" Jones in his wheel standing-fire truck, sponsored by Jelly Belly.
"We struggled through three sessions that weren't up to our par and this last run was a confidence builder for this KB Racing team. In those three sessions we were having issues and making mistakes. It's not a comfortable feeling going into Sunday when you're making mistakes. It's good to know you finally made the right move and went the right direction. That will give us something to tune this Summit Pontiac from for tomorrow. At least now we figured out how to do it. We have to be on our game tomorrow and not make a mistake."
Anderson will find Ken Koretsky in the other lane in the opening round tomorrow. Koretsky qualified No.14 with a pass of 6.780 seconds at 203.46 mph.
