[coverattach=1]Las Vegas, qualifying: If having a consistent car plays into a winning hand, Pro Stock driver, Johnny Gray should bet the house on his Dodge Stratus for the Las Vegas Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The talented New Mexico driver is qualified fifth and looking for his steady performance to work to his advantage all the way through race day.
Gray made four consistent runs in qualifying. Friday he ran 6.696 at 206.13 mph, and stepped up on the second pass to post an impressive 6.677 at 206.20. Saturday’s qualifying brought the same, a 6.728 at 205.47 and 6.725 at 205.01.
“We’re happy with the car’s performance,” explained Gray. “It went out there every time and looked pretty good. It didn’t do anything too stupid and that’s always a welcome relief. We had a few little mechanical issues but nothing serious and they’ve been figured out. So, we’re hopeful that tomorrow could be a great day.
Gray will face No. 12 qualifier, Greg Stanfield in the first round of eliminations. It will be a big match up and a win would mean a lot to Gray. He holds the No. 7 spot in the championship battle, just 41 points behind No. 5 seated, Stanfield.
“Our first-round is going to be a big one,” said Gray. “I’m glad we get to run Greg first because we need to get around him in the points chase and taking him out first-round would be huge for us. If we don’t get past him, it will be our fault. All I can say is that we control our own destiny.”
With the performance Gray has enjoyed so far this weekend, his destiny looks like a pretty sure bet.
