HOUSTON, Texas - Mike Ashley has raced Pro Modified long enough to know the current field of Jeg's Pro Modified competitors will bring out the best effort a team has to offer.
Ashley concluded the first day of qualifications for the 21st annual O'Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Springnationals in Houston, Texas as the 13th quickest qualifier in the Jegs Pro Modified division. His best run of the day was a 6.104 elapsed time at 239.23 miles per hour. The two-time NHRA Pro Modified world champion from Long Island, New York has one more opportunity to improve his status on Saturday.
"You look at the performance of this class and it certainly has stepped up," said Ashley, who won this event in 2004. "This is a new car and we're having a time finding what it really wants."
Not finding what Ashley calls the "sweet spot" has not been for a lack of effort, though. The team has made countless test runs over the last two months seeking the perfect combination.
"On our quickest run tonight, we shook all the way through first and second gear," Ashley added.
Ashley estimated the run should have been in the mid-5.90 range. The provisional low qualifying elapsed time was a 5.970.
"We're just going to keep after it," Ashley said. "Believe me, I'm having fun."
Poor weather forecasts kept many teams from pushing the edge of the envelope during Friday's qualifying. The Gotham City Racing Team entered the day doing business as usual.
"We come out here to be the best and at the end of the day, that's our clearly defined objective," Ashley said. "We have a long term plan with this team and we are taking it one round at a time. I'm happy with our team."
BAKER DRIVES BURGESS CORVETTE TO THIRD
Recent Gatornationals champion Joe Baker put in an impressive performance filling in for Ashley's teammate Roger Burgess.
Baker, of Milton, Florida, drove the Gotham City Racing Corvette to the third quickest time of Friday qualifying with a 6.001 elapsed time at 241.71 miles per hour.
Qualifying resumes tomorrow at 11 AM, CST, with the first round of competition slated to begin at 4 PM.
