Clermont, IN - The Goodguys Hot Rod Nationals returns to O'Reilly Raceway Park for the 20th time this weekend bringing over 4,000 ’72 and earlier rods and customs as well as 300 vintage drag racing machines to the historic facility just outside Indianapolis.
Headlining the racing portion of the event will be a booked in show of nitro burning Nostalgia Funny Cars pitting the Midwest ’s finest nostalgia fuel floppers against one another. Set to make its national debut is Justin Grant ’s “Wonder Wagon.” Grant’s Wonder Wagon is an exact replica of Don Schumacher’s Buttera version that barnstormed the country in 1973 as part of the Coca Cola Cavalcade of Funny Cars. A full field of eight 250mph nitro burning vintage funny cars will participate in the event including Steve Nichols’ Mill Road Boys ’71 Camaro, John Dunn’s Dunn & Gone ’72 Nova, Kyle Wertzel’s Motown Shaker ’73 Vega, Danny Miller’s Rear Gears ’73 Maverick, Greg Jacobsmeyer’s All Star ’71 Dodge Challenger, Shawn Bowen’s Violator ’78 Trans Am and Rocky Pirrone’s “Screamin’ Eagle” ’77 Trans Am.
Nostalgia Top Fuel is also in the playbill. Headlining the top fuel division is “Radar” Roger Lechtenberg who drives Dale & Kat Suhr’s Iowa based “Orange Crate” top fuel dragster. A field of over fourteen 250mph dragsters are pre-registered to battle it out for Indy glory, including 66-year old Dan Horan Sr. who will tow all the way from Southern California to run his 1971 Don Long nostalgia top fuel dragster.
In addition to the nitro headliner’s there’s a full palate of exciting vintage drag racing on tap including popular classes like Super Eliminator, Pro Comp I and II, A/GAS, B/GAS, Nostalgia Comp, Nostalgia Gas, and Hot Rod Eliminator. Also making their return are the popular “Geezer Gasser’s” and Nostalgia Super Stockers insuring a gear-grinding trip down memory lane.
A new feature to this year’s event will be a vintage oval track reunion featuring historic sprint cars, midgets and Indy cars displayed under a big top tent in the parks Tower parking lot. Fans will get a chance to see these historic oval racers up close and get autographs from famous drivers.
Qualifying and time trials take place Friday June 6th and Saturday 7th. Opening round eliminations for the Nostalgia Funny Cars and Top Fuel dragsters is scheduled for Saturday afternoon at 3:30pm. Final eliminations will commence Sunday, June 8th at 10am.
