"We got everything back to the G2 factory for the first time in forever," said a relieved George Bryce, builder and tuner of the G2 NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle team. "And it's giving us every opportunity to put our best foot forward. We're very excited about going to Indy."
Indeed. Bryce and the crew are reworking their S&S billet bullets in preparation for the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals and the Ringers Gloves Pro Bike Battle—the NHRA's version of a Pro Stock Motorcycle All-Star race. Both events take place this weekend at O'Reilly Raceway Park near Indianapolis, Indiana. "We were able to send the motors back to school and unlearn some things we didn't like about them and learn 'em some new things that we did like and make them all model students," said Bryce. "Little things that would seem insignificant to most can mean the difference between a round win or a round loss. Quoting the late, great Dave Schultz, 'We have to remember that 100 pennies make a dollar.' Dave said he was content finding pennies."
And it just might be "pennies" that make the difference in the biggest weekend of the most competitive season in NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle history. As if "The Big Go" wasn't big enough, the Ringers Glove Battle doubles the event's importance to the bike crowd. "I think I've been in every one of the Ringers Glove Battles and Wax Shop Shootouts, and won a few with John Myers and Reggie Showers," continued Bryce. "Chip made it to the finals in his first one, so we've got to improve on that. And Matthew's in his first this year. We've got two bikes in a field of eight, so that 's pretty cool."
"It's awesome," DRAG Specialties/S&S Buell driver Chip Ellis said about the Ringers Battle. "But I'm just gonna treat it like qualifying and try and get to the other end of the track before the other guy, or girl. I try to treat every pass the same. That way you don't get in your mind that it's first round or something."
It's last year's final round of the U.S. Nationals that still remains foremost in the mind of Matt Smith, driver of the Torco Race Fuels/Skull Gear Buell. That was the race where Smith was awarded the win on raceday, but had it taken away when video evidence was used, for the first time ever, to overturn time and scoring data. "I guess that's my biggest memory about Indy," laughed Smith, who can indeed laugh about it now. "That was my first time on the G2 bike and it was the most controversial win in all of NHRA history. I'm gonna try to make it stick this year. I'm gonna go out there and give it the best that I can."
Whichever S&S motor is nestled in the Kosman frame rails of Smith's Buell, it will be fresh. "The motorcycles have to be disassembled for the tech committee on Friday, and put back together for our first hit Friday evening," said Bryce. "If everything goes well on Saturday, we'll test new engines on Sunday and figure what we want to run on Monday. I plan to have fun on Friday, run a national event on Saturday, test 'n tune on Sunday, and run another national event on Monday." Bryce will also have dinner with the NHRA rules committee in Brownsburg on Thursday and aid Dave Barton in the Hemi Challenge on Friday.
Ellis, meanwhile, has been reassembling the old, original G2 Pro Stock Buell that he put on the pole his first time at Indy two years ago. "S&S is having it on display, so I have to make it look just like it did the last time it raced at Pomona last year when Matt rode it," said Chip. "If anybody wanted to race it, it's pretty near race ready." Ellis went up to Drag Specialties in Janesville, Wisconsin over the past weekend and put up a display for an event there. "I've been driving the truck a lot."
Smith is looking forward to some driving himself. "I'm taking my motorhome to Indy," said Matt. "I'm gonna try and get up there early and get a good parking space and have fun. You have to be serious about racing, but you have to have fun, too. I'm very much looking forward to running this weekend."
