G2 Plans Entertaining Weekend for DRAG Specialties

"This will be an exciting weekend," G2's George Smith said about the upcoming Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals at Pomona, California. "Our major sponsor DRAG Specialties is setting up a hospitality suite for their dealer representatives, and we intend to put on a great show for them."

"We're very excited about the hospitality event with DRAG Specialties," said G2 tuner/crew chief George Bryce. "It's our last race of the season and we're gonna try really hard to do well. We've won lots of times in Pomona and set records there. The track's always good to us."

"I qualified number 1 there last year with a 7 flat," said Matt Smith, driver of the Torco Race Fuels/Skull Gear Buell. "But then I lost in the first round to Michael Phillips. I've qualified well there, but I haven't raced well. Hopefully I'll turn that around and get a lucky break. You've always got to have luck on your side."

Counting on more than luck, the G2 team has been working steadily to solve a drop-off in performance over the last 320 feet of track at the most recent event in Las Vegas. "We've been working on my motor back at the shop," reported Chip Ellis, driver of the DRAG Specialties/S&S Cycle Buell. "We're trying a different crank set-up. It didn't show any more power on the dyno, but I'm hoping it does better on the racetrack. I think it's gonna be alright. I'm gonna ride it as best as I can and cut good lights and what it will be is what it will be. Hopefully it'll be good."

"We over-revved my motor twice in Vegas," said Matt. "So we'll put in the back-up motor that we ran 6.96 with testing at Rockingham. We've never run that motor in competition before, but I expect we'll run well with it."

"We're gonna try some tuning things that we let slip between our fingers that we want to test right or wrong," said Bryce. "Wheelie bar adjustments, air pressure in the tire, clutch tuning, fuel injection, and timing. And after the race we've got a whole list of things we want to do to use what we've learned."

Ellis spent last weekend racing a streetbike at the AMA/Prostar National Finals in Gainesville, Florida. "It was good to see a bunch of my friends that I hadn't seen in awhile, and get back to my streetbike roots," said Chip. He and Matt both won AMA/Prostar championships on their way to NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle. "Now I wanna have some fun in Pomona. I'm gonna try and do well and bring home a trophy."

"Of course I want to win the race," agreed Matt. "But my main goal is to go at least as far as Karen Stoffer and Ryan Schnitz to stay fifth in points. I've never finished in the NHRA's top 10 before. Then we're gonna sign our deal with Evan Knoll of Torco and Skull Gear after Pomona, so I know my deal is secure for next year. I hope we do well out there and we can look forward to doing well in 2007."
