The G2 NHRA Pro Stock motorcycle team had mixed results in round 1 of qualifying for the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals. Matt Smith was third quickest of the session and was all-smiles heading into Saturday's Ringers Gloves Pro Bike Battle, while teammate Chip Ellis was seventh quickest and crossing his fingers for Saturday.
Qualifying round 1
3rd Matt Smith right lane 7.089 at 184.47 mph
7th Chip Ellis right lane 7.136 at 184.27 mph
"We didn't have enough clutch in it," Ellis said about the DRAG Specialties/S&S Buell. "It slipped the clutch all the way down the racetrack. Something happened to the motor also, we're not even sure what yet."<img src="http://gallery.nitromater.com/files/6/5/ChipMeetsPress5401.jpg" alt="ChipMeetsPress5401" align="right"borders="0"/>
"Something happened to the rear cylinder," G2 builder/tuner George Bryce said about Ellis' bike. "It had 50% leakdown but still ran the same mph in the eighth and the quarter mile as Angelle (Sampey, who was in the other lane), so we know we would have been number 1 or number 2 qualifier if we'd had enough clutch in it. There was a ton of horsepower in there, even with it leakin'. That may be the best motor we have."
Maybe, but Ellis and Ken "Big" Johnson were swapping out the suspect motor number 028 with the 007 heads and putting in 023. "We're going into battle with a new weapon," said Ellis, who cranked the new motor through it's compression cycle with a breaker bar and tried to decide how he felt about it.
At the other end of the pit, Rick Maney had no such doubts about the Torco Race Fuels/Skull Gear Buell he was sending Smith into battle with. "We made a really good lap right off the trailer," smiled Maney. "And Matthew drove the bike really well, he did his job. We missed the tune-up just a tick, but we've got nothing but A+'s on this bike. George Bryce made the perfect sprocket and tune-up call and it just went right down through there."<img src="http://gallery.nitromater.com/files/6/5/MattMakesEntrance5401.jpg" alt="MattMakesEntrance5401" align="left"borders="0"/>
Smith's bike has the same motor number 016 that ran so well last time out in Memphis. "That's the motor that went to the finals here last year," added Maney. "We serviced all our stuff between races and put our best shot at it and did OK. I just wanted to see Chip get in a little deeper. We just spent twelve hours a day rebuilding all these motors, and that's why we're so upset about Chip's. That was a high pressure round for all the Pro Bike Battle guys. We want to see both of these bikes in the final tomorrow, which is very, very possible. But every round will be tough tomorrow."
"We thought we'd get another pass tonight, but we didn't," said Ellis. There was only 20 minutes after round 1 of qualifying before Ringers Pro Bike Battle riders interested in making a test pass in the other lane had to present themselves.
Bryce, for one , wasn't disappointed in not making the extra pass. "I didn't wanna make the second pass," said Bryce. "It's at night and doesn't represent anything. Everybody always goes slow. I've never made the second pass in 13 years."
Bryce, who's won the Battle a few times in those 13 years, doesn't expect either of his two bikes or riders to go slow on any pass on Saturday.
