NORWALK, Ohio (June 30, 2007) – Rod Fuller likes the number five. While he is the current NHRA Top Fuel points leader, his car number is five. Saturday afternoon at Summit Racing Equipment Motorsports Park , the diminutive driver earned his fifth career pole award with a 4.533-second elapsed time.
Fuller’s quickest pass of qualifying came Friday evening under the lights at the storied Norwalk quarter mile when he powered his all-white David Powers-owned rail to a performance of 4.533 seconds at 323.50 mph. It set a track E.T. record and was his third pole of the season and fifth of his brief Top Fuel career.
“Five is my lucky number,” Fuller said. “I’m number five, five was my number in both football and soccer and I’m 5’5”. I’m just really impressed by this facility and the fans. The place just has a feeling of home to it, like I’m at a bracket race. I just feel really comfortable here. It’s pretty awesome what our team has been doing and we just keep it going. I have a lot of confidence with my car and team.”
On Saturday, Fuller and the Rob Flynn-led crew were in test mode. They raced with the Bill Miller-style injector on Fuller’s plain white dragster. On his first pass, the four-time NHRA winner’s rail overpowered the hot Norwalk strip, before carding a 4.624-second pass to conclude qualifying at the Inaugural Norwalk race.
Fuller will face off against No. 16 qualifier Melanie Troxel in the opening round of Top Fuel eliminations at 11 a.m. (ET) on Sunday. Fuller is 6-1 in his career against her.
