LAS VEGAS (Oct. 27, 2007) – Rod Fuller is back to his old antics of qualifying his David Powers-owned Caterpillar dragster near the top of the order in NHRA’s Top Fuel category. The five-time NHRA winner powered his CAT-backed rail to the No. 4 qualifying position Saturday at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
Fuller entered the final day of qualifying for the seventh annual ACDelco Las Vegas Nationals ranked seventh in the Top Fuel order with an elapsed time of 4.558 seconds that he posted on Friday evening. On Saturday’s opening pass, Fuller used Rob Flynn horsepower to card a performance of 4.576 seconds at 324.20 mph. He moved to 11th in the 16-car order following three of four qualifying sessions. On his final qualifying attempt of the weekend, Fuller used more of Flynn’s “Canadian Horsepower” to blister the LVMS quarter mile in 4.529 at 326.32 to vault to the No. 4 qualifying position. It is the 21st time in 22 races (Seattle) that Fuller has qualified in the top half of the 16-car order and the fourth time that he has earned the No. 4 spot this year.
“That last run was big,” Fuller said. “For us to run a 4.529 and move from 11th to fourth was a big confidence boost to our entire race team. We’ve struggled at the last few races, so to get back to normal and qualify in the top four was something we really needed. Now we need to go out and double up on Sunday and take home the big paycheck.”
He will face off against No. 13 qualified David Grubnic in the opening round of Top Fuel eliminations at 11 a.m. (PT) on Sunday at LVMS. Fuller is 7/4 in 11 career matches against the Australian native. ESPN2 will televise three hours of final eliminations coverage from the ACDelco Las Vegas Nationals at 7 p.m. (ET) on Oct. 28.
