PETERSBURG, Va. (Oct. 6, 2007) – Rod Fuller continued to qualify his David Powers-owned Caterpillar dragster in the top half of the Top Fuel field, but more importantly secured one of the four coveted positions in the Countdown to One Saturday afternoon at Virginia Motorsports Park. The five-time NHRA winner raced his Caterpillar-backed rail to the No. 7 qualifying position with a time of 4.591-seconds.
The Las Vegas racer entered the second day of qualifying for the Torco Racing Fuels Nationals pitted ninth in the 16-car order after posting a time of 4.858-seconds on Friday evening. Friday’s first qualifying session was canceled following an afternoon rain shower. The rising Top Fuel star used a tune-up from crew chief Rob Flynn to power the Caterpillar-backed rail to the third quickest pass of the round. Fuller carded a run of 4.591 seconds at 321.50 mph to move to fifth in the Top Fuel order. Fuller posted a solid lap of 4.616 at 308.78 on his final attempt of the weekend to finish seventh in the order and now has qualified in the top half of the field at 20 of 21 races this season.
“I’m very pleased with the day,” Fuller said. “Last night, we dropped a hole and came out today and made a solid run on our first pass. On the second run, we tried to go for the top spot. It was on a great run and the early numbers were good, but it started to spin down track and it slowed. It gives us a great baseline for race day.”
Fuller will face off against No. 10 qualifier Doug Foley in the first round of eliminations at 11 a.m. (ET). Fuller is 1-1 against Foley this season. ESPN2 will televise three hours of final eliminations coverage from the Second annual Torco Racing Fuels Nationals at 7 p.m. (ET) on Oct. 7.
