ENGLISHTOWN, N.J. (June 16) -- Busy summer schedules will keep two of the top 10 and four of the top 20 racers in the JEGS ProMod Challenge out of the field at this weekend's 39th annual Lucas Oil NHRA SuperNationals at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park.
The most notable driver out of the mix is Eddie Ware, the Disturbed Motorsports racer who won the Atlanta national event on April 27th in his 1967 Pontiac Firebird. Ware is currently third in the JEGS rankings, just 46 points behind leader Tony Pontieri.
Last week, two-time series champion Mike Ashley announced he was removing himself from all competition for the remainder of the year to concentrate on his mortgage business, Lend America, which is the presenting sponsor of this JEGS event. Ninth in the points, Ashley was winless on the tour this year but raced to a runner-up result at the last Pro Mod stop in Bristol, Tenn. He was also the Ohio Crankshaft No. 1 qualifier in Gainesville, Fla., in his ProCare Rx hot rod.
Rick Stivers (16th) and Mike Knowles (20th) will also miss the E-town race, as will series organizer Troy Coughlin (21st), whose crew continues to build him a new car to replace the one he wrecked in Atlanta.
Fortunately for series organizers, there was a lengthy list of 19 alternates eager to gobble up the open spots.
Filling in for the drivers that can't compete are a couple of newcomers to the series, Vinny Budano and David Hance. Both men hail from the northeast and are thrilled to be racing at a place they consider as their hometown track. Hance is racing a twin-turbo racecar, while Budano will modify the car he uses to dominate the NMCA circuit.
Tommy Gray also returns to the JEGS ProMod Challenge in his popular Undertaker Pontiac GTO, while Brad Personett will continue to fine-tune his own Bigstuff EFI Precision turbo-charged entry.
Adding some extra excitement, for the first time this year the JEGS tour will feature a nitrous-powered entry as Mike Castellana brings the world's fastest NOS car to the event.
