Darryl McMillen will race Top Sportsman Corvette in Stratford Spectacular Hot August Nationals August 8-9

GODERICH, ONTARIO (August 1, 2009) – An accident on a motocross bike initially got Darryl McMillen involved in drag racing.

“Myself and my son raced motocross for about 10 year,” explained the driver of the TTK Transport Inc. 1963 Corvette, which competes in the Top Sportsman class of the Quick 32 Sportsman Series presented by NAPA Auto Parts. “But after an accident I made the crossover to drag racing.”

Starting in 2001, McMillen raced in Bracket racing “until I got bored with it,” and then stepped up to a Top Sportsman Firebird. After some time with the 7.50 car, he moved up to his present Corvette, which he competes in various local and IHRA racing at tracks in Ontario and Michigan.

Powered by a 632-cubic inch Pontiac with Big Chief Heads, the engine in the Advantage-chassied car is fed by a Speed Tech nitrous system via a pair of Holley 1150 carburetors, and linked up to a two-speed Powerglide transmission.

Now in the second full season with the Corvette, McMillen said after hurting the engine at the recent IHRA MOPAR Nationals, it has been rebuilt and ready to go for the next event in the Quick 32 Sportsman Series, the Stratford Spectacular Hot August Nationals presented by Ideal Supply & NAPA Auto Parts at the Grand Bend Motorplex August 8-9.

“Our season has been pretty good,” said the Goderich, Ontario racer. “We’ve had some issues, but we had a good time at our initial outing this year at Cayuga.”

The TTK Transport Inc. team is comprised of crew chief Perry Wood, along with Ted Lucas, Richard Butler and Carol McMillen.

Sponsorship is provided by TTK Transport Inc, Huron Tire & Auto, and Lucas Freight Systems.

McMillen, who said he has noticed car counts shrinking due to the economy, believes the counts will increase after this season, adding the new Quick 32 Sportsman Series came along at the right moment.

“I love it,” he said of the series. “Everyone involved in the Quick 32 Sportsman Series has done a great job. It is top-notch and has gone over very well. We have been given an opportunity to race and keep our guys together. It has renewed our interest.”

McMillen, who won his class in the Stratford event at Grand Bend three years ago, said he is ready and looking forward to the August 8-9 race.

“I’m looking forward to it,” he said of the Stratford event. “There will be a lot of cars. It’s almost a national (IHRA) event except there are no fuel cars.”

The Quick 32 Sportsman Series presented by NAPA Auto Parts teams will return to the Grand Bend Motorplex August 8-9 for the running of the Stratford Spectacular Hot August Nationals presented by Ideal Supply & NAPA Auto Parts, which will feature round three of Quick 32 Sportsman Series racing, along with round four in the Pro Modified Racing Association tour.

The eighth-mile racing event will also feature a four car Alcohol Funny Car Match Race, a Jet Truck, a Supercharged V8 Drag Bike, the Grand Bend Motorplex Top Dragster and Top Sportsman Series, plus great racing action in the Thunder series and Junior programs, plus Fireworks.

Complimentary event tickets are available at Ideal Supply & NAPA Auto Parts locations across Ontario, at businesses in Stratford or by contacting the Quick 32 Sportsman Series or the Pro Modified Racing Association.

General parking is $20 per car load, and weekend camping is available.
