Foley & lewis 2008

With the announcement on Wednesday, January 9th, regarding Foley & Lewis’ major sponsor, Torco Race Fuels’ interruption of their 2008 commitments for all Torco-sponsored teams, it’s left the Foley & Lewis New Jersey-based Top Fuel team to have to explore other avenues of support.

Team co-owner and driver Doug Foley said, “We’d like to thank Evan Knoll and Torco Race Fuels for all the support they’ve given us over the years, but the timing of his announcement couldn’t have come at a worse time.

“We had everything in place - a new car, new truck and trailer, parts, crew members, 13 engines, etc. – all set to leave on January 19th for the west coast test sessions and to start the season at the Carquest Auto Parts NHRA Winternationals in Pomona at the beginning of February,” Foley added. “With Evan’s support, this was to be our first chance to race the entire NHRA POWERade tour.”

In 2007, the Foley & Lewis team attended only 14 NHRA races, yet finished No. 16 in the points battle that included five semi-final round finishes. The momentum built last year would have given the team its best chance to be a part of the NHRA Countdown to the Championship in ’08. Now… Things remain very much up in the air.

“Without Torco’s financial support,” Foley says, “it’s going to be close to impossible to accomplish our goals. And I’m even concerned over the ramifications the Torco announcement will have on drag racing in general. The way I total it up, it would leave roughly only 12 full-time Top Fuel teams on the POWERade circuit. That certainly isn’t good for the sport.”

As soon as the Torco announcement was made, plans in the Foley & Lewis camp were set in turmoil. “We hate to give up the points chase so early in the season,” Foley says, “but we’re looking for anyone to help us to get to the first couple of races, which will buy us time to attract a new primary sponsor.”

Like a lot of other teams, scrambling is now going to be the order of the day.

Team co-owner Tim Lewis said, “We’re confident that things will work out, as our team has a lot to offer a potential sponsor. Are we worried? Rightfully so. But we proved last year we know how to perform well under pressure and if this isn’t pressure, I don’t know what is.”

Foley said, “We still have a number of associate sponsors like Jet Label, Dake Industries and J.G. Parks & Son who have been with us a long time. We appreciate their support in helping us to get through this period.”
