Firebird Raceway renovation?

Must have just started... I drove by on Saturday and the grandstands were still intact....

They hired a new track manager, that has to be a good thing.

My understanding is it will take time to buy the equipment the track needs. Once they get all the equipment then they can train the new staff.

If you are listening indian tribe, send the important people to Norwalk Ohio for 3 weeks to learn how to really operate a race track. You will be glad you did.

Just saw on the Firebird website that the old management, Charlie et al, will be at the track corporate office until May 15, not much the new management can do until the old management moves out.

Read on another board that new name is Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park with grand opening around mid October and possible other events before then.

My car is waiting.

Heard from someone down there they taking signs down. What are the latest rumors.

Whatever they'll call it, there'll be a dragstrip and motorsports facility there in the same pace Firebird has lived.

The grandstands, timing system, track prep vehicles, pencils, paper, xerox machines, water fountains, etc. that were owned by the previous leaseholder were disposed of and sold by that leaseholder.

That was his property and he can do what he wants with all of it, hence they stayed in the main office until May 15 to recoup his investment and dispose of his property.

Things can get ugly during the times of transition of anything, but disposing of your own stuff is perfectly legal and expected. :eek:

Looks like NHRA will have to trust that everything goes OK with the opening of the new Firebird since they will be announcing the 2014 schedule almost two months before Firebird re-opens.

Anyone who was around in the 1980's will remember that the "management" stripped OCIR of everything that was and wasn't bolted down and took it to Firebird, including the Armco guardrailing.

The first time I walked in to Firebird I thought OCIR had been reborn in the desert. Same hanging tree, grandstands, everything.

Wasnt Firebird being built that last year of OCIR?

OCIR closed in 1984. Firebird opened in 1985. Charley Allen was the leaseholder of the property when it expired and the Irvine Company reclaimed it for development. I was at OCIR for the real last drag race the weekend after the supposed Last Drag race that featured funny cars. The real last drag race was a Saturday bracket race that lasted until 4:00 AM Sunday morning. Since it was the last race no one cared about the curfew.

A month or more later I rode my motorcycle out there to see what was going on with the property. I drove through the Sand Canyon gate on to the road that went under the 5 freeway along side the railroad tracks and Marine Base. I rode up to the starting line and parked my bike just to take it all in. The place was already stripped of all the timing equipment, guardrailing, lights, etc., never to be seen again....until I went to Firebird when they opened. Having made about 10,000 runs at OCIR from racing there just about every weekend for 13+ years it was good to see the stuff had new life at Charlie's new track.

I always enjoy your posts describing racing at the old SoCal tracks Randy...then I remember that I'm still mad at you for ever selling that Arias powered A/A. :D

Randy;
I knew there was a reason I liked Firebird. I was surrounded by OCIR stuff.
It makes sense now why I didn't mind the surroundings it was old school drag racing facilities.

Nunzio;
Saw an Arias powered monster truck in Feb. the driver said it was #59. I took my Grandson to watch them. The last time I saw an Arias was in a boat in early 80's didn't know they still had parts for them.
