Ellis Readies for Vegas with Record Runs at The Rock

NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle racer Chip Ellis and his DRAG Specialties/S&S Cycle Buell prepped for the ACDelco Las Vegas Nationals by rotating the earth at Steve Earwood's Rockingham Dragway in Rockingham, North Carolina. Racing his NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle-legal Buell in the AHDRA's Pro Gas class, Ellis qualified number 1, set the track record, set the AHDRA record, ran the all-time low ET for a gasoline V-Twin, and won the race.

The Rock is probably the most motorcycle-friendly dragstrip on the planet, and South Carolina native Ellis has a long history of racing there. AHDRA (All Harley Drag Racing Association) events are also a great showcase for G2 sponsors DRAG Specialties and S&S Cycle. "It was a great event," said Ellis, who piloted the G2 Road King in Street ET in addition to the Pro Stock Buell. "We had a lot of fun and the bike ran awesome."

"We made our annual visit to The Rock," said G2 co-owner George Bryce. "We got to visit our friends and customers and help them with their projects that we've been involved with all year. We also wanted to prepare the DRAG Specialties team for the NHRA's Countdown to One."

And prepare they did. Ellis's qualifying laps on the Buell were 6.946 at 189.15 mph, 6.961 at 188.99, and 6.941 at 192.06. That's great, consistent stuff, but the team saved their best for raceday. "Our slowest run in eliminations was a 6.90," said Bryce. Chip's numbers in eliminations were an .078 light and a 6.880 at 191.57 in round 1, a .033 and 6.905 at 192.66 in the semis, and a .131 and 6.879 at 193.07 against G2 customer Junior Pippin in the final.

"You can't really tell it's pulling any harder on those laps, but you can tell it's running through the gears faster," said Ellis.

"We ran pretty good," said G2 crew chief and co-owner George Smith. "The atmospheric conditions were real good. It was dry and clear and didn't get too hot. The track was pretty tight and we weren't spinning down track at all. Frankly, if we'd run any less than that, I would have been pretty disappointed. George, Ken (chief mechanic Ken "Big" Johnson), Chip, and I were able to work together and experiment."

"It was a combo platter of effort," agreed Bryce.

"I've learned a lot from all these guys," added Smith. "George and I collaborated this weekend and it paid dividends. We also tried some improved parts that the S&S guys provided us with, and we were able to experiment with the tuning of the bike. We've been running good since Brainerd, and what we're trying to do is take everything we've learned from the last five or six races and make it consistent so we can run as quick through all the passes as we did early in the weekend. We were able to do that.

"The motors ran real well and Ken did his usual flawless job preparing the bike. Chip was surging well on the launch, better than he has been lately. He brought that back to the table and we were able to run a couple of 1.06 60 foot times. On a non-NHRA prepared track, that was really satisfying."

"I focused on surging good and cutting good lights," said Ellis. "I knew we had Junior covered by a couple of tenths and took it easy in the final. In hindsight, I probably should have just run my usual lap. But I think we did pretty good."

"Chip also had a great time racing our Road King, a highway cruiser, in ET," added Bryce. "He ran 10.40 at 132 mph on that. He was spotting airshifter bikes and running them down with the bagger. That was fun."

It was also a good outing for S&S powered Buell pilot Pippin, who ran his personal bests, including a 7.15 in the final. "Junior ran his personal lows like a bracket bike, and we were very pleased for him," said Smith.

"DRAG Specialties was there supporting the AHDRA. We're looking forward to having their hospitality transporter at the last two NHRA events, Las Vegas and Pomona. Greg Blackwell is DRAG Specialties' VP of Sales and Marketing, and he's coming to Vegas. We're very excited to have him join us to witness the NHRA excitement."

"I can't wait to get to Vegas," finished Ellis, whose first NHRA win came at The Strip. "It's my favorite track. I won there two years in a row. I'm feeling more confident in my riding and I wish we were on our way there right now."

Chip Ellis and the DRAG Specialties/S&S Cycle team race next at the ACDelco Las Vegas NHRA Nationals, October 25-28_at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Las Vegas, Nevada.
