JOLIET, Ill. (June 4) – After earning a runner-up finish last year, Division 7 racer Dwight Downing will be among the favorites to claim the Super Street title during the 24th annual JEGS Allstars, which will be held during the upcoming Torco Race Fuels Route 66 Nationals at Route 66 Raceway. Downing, of Glendale, Ariz., has qualified for the prestigious event for a second-straight season, and will be eying the $4,500 top prize when action gets underway on Saturday, June 7. In addition to the individual honors, the 64 Allstars contestants, representing the best racers in the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series from each of NHRA’s seven geographic divisions, will be battling for a share of more than $100,000, including a $20,000 bonus for the team that accumulates the most round wins. Drivers qualify for the JEGS Allstars team following a year-long battle within their home division.
Downing, a former Division 7 champion and the winner of the 2000 NHRA national event at Heartland Park Topeka, is off to another solid start in 2008. He recently won the Lucas Oil Series event in Tucson, Ariz., and is the current leader in the Division 7 standings.
Downing’s biggest challenge is likely to come from the driver who defeated him in last year’s final round, Division 4 racer Craig Abbott, of Strawn, Texas, is one of the sports most accomplished Super Street drivers with numerous final rounds to his credit. As the reigning champion, Abbott is automatically qualified for this year’s event though he is officially listed as a blocker, meaning that he cannot earn points towards the overall team championship.
Another driver who must be included among the favorites is Dudley Gee of Canby, Ore., Gee, the Division 6 representative, will be making his third-career appearance in the JEGS Allstars. He previously earned a runner-up finish in 2003 and also qualified for the Division 6 team in 2000. Gee kicked off his 2008 season with a victory at the Lucas event at Firebird Raceway in Boise, Idaho. The remainder of the JEGS Allstars Super Street field includes Gary Federico (Division 1), Mike DeSio (Division 2), Regan Wilson (Division 3), Regan Wilson (Division 4) and Jeff Landholm (Division 5).
As an added bonus for all JEGS Allstars competitors, any racer who can win the Allstars title on Saturday will have a chance to claim the JEGS double-up bonus by winning the Torco Race Fuels Route 66 Nationals the following day.
