As I was walking around town today, I noticed a lot of DHL vans and it crossed my mind......has DHL released a public statement regarding the death of Scott Kalitta? Seems proper that they should don't you think? I see nothing on their website, or vehicles or anywhere for that matter.

there is a statement from then in the Scott Kalitta memorial section on NHRA.com

As I was out & about today, I too noticed DHL delivery vans.
About an hour ago at Olive Garden, just as I was leaving, a DHL van pulled up. I looked up at the sky and said "Scotty, Scotty, why did you have to leave us?"

I stopped my local DHL driver today. Asked if he knew who Scott K. was.
NO. I informed him who Scott was, and what happened.

I am Extremely Disappointed. I would think a company that sponsored a car would let employees know, and inform them if something "unusual" happened.

Lee, sorry your encounter with the DHL Employee went like that. Interestingly enough this morning I was down in shipping looking for a package that had been delayed and the DHL truck showed up and I went up to the driver and asked if he had heard about Scott Kalitta. He replied very quickly "yes, I was watching the broadcast. What a terrible thing." And we went on visiting briefly and just before he took off, he said "if you find out where to get the stickers, let me know--I already got permission to put it on the truck if I can get one."

Interesting comparison, but Lee, I'm guessing my driver was a drag racing fan and knew and cared about Scott from being a fan and not necessarily from any intervention from DHL to its employees. I did feel better anyway to know someone in that big orange van was missing Scott also.

I'm retired from Mars North America (M&M) We've sponsored NASCAR teams for about 15 years. We had race results posted every week, and press releases issued in company before going out to the general public. We had life size cut outs of whoever the current driver was, placed in various locations in the building.

I am not a NASCAR fan, so I never bothered opening emails with information anything about it. Maybe your guy falls into that category, Lee. Him not knowing about Scott, doesn't necessarily mean DHL wasn't putting the information out there. Maybe he just wasn't interested in drag racing?

I found out, that the local DHL delivery is privately operated, a franchise from the parent company. Even my local rep didn't know they were involved in drag racing when they set me up last year.

What I find surprising is that none of the Three, DHL, Fed, Ups, really promote their racing involvement to the guys and gals in the shipping and receiving dept. But, I will say, during 49CFR training with brown, Bobby V's picture came up more than once, both him and the car.

DHL uses an independent contractor in the Phoenix area and we have not been impressed. We spend about a grand a month with UPS and choose to do so because of superior service and their sponsorship of Bob. There used to be a lot of enthusiasm for the NASCAR team by drivers when Dale Jarrett was driving - since the switch, nothing. Our regular delivery and pickup drivers would know nothing about the Vandergriff sponsorship if they didn't talk motorsports with us. You would think that this would be a huge opportunity for NHRA to connect with well paid UPS employees to convert them to drag racing fans. Oh well -

I'd like to commend DHL on their statement reguarding the tragic loss of Scott Kalitta's life. All DHL ground operations are independant contractors in the "lower 48". The DHL involvment with Kalitta Motorsports goes back to when Kalitta Air would outsource their aircraft for DHL transport. To my knowledge, they did not really market their motorsports marketing efforts to their employees.

As your local UPS guy about Bob Vandergriff and you'll most likely hear the "who's that" answer, or what is a top fuel dragster? Most Fed Ex Employee's are aware that Fed Ex has a Nextel Cup car, (Due to the fact that there is a lot of Safety related poster's in each "Station" ) but most do not know the answer to who the driver is.

I sent a letter to the DHL corporate HQ to let them know what a great job that Scott and the Entire Kalitta Motorsports team did to represent their company. It is my hope and wish that DHL continues their involvment with Kalitta Motorsports thru the years.

I just got a delivery from DHL.
Asked the driver about it. She said she didn't know about it. Hadn't heard about the accident or anything. Although, she was apologetic, as she was walking out, she said "I wish they'd sponsor somebody in NASCAR."

Its my experience that many employees don't know about the sponsoring that their company does, that is for the ultra large companies. I'm not sure if it even has anything to do with racing or just sponsorships in general. I deal with the big 3 small package companies. Of course fedex doesn't sponsor anything but the people at ups and dhl haven't known about their involvement in Drag Racing. I suppose on the operations side it really doesn't impact their job to know that. Maybe the sales person would.

Like I said I don't think its just a racing thing. Through my involvement with Special Olympics there have been companies that sponsor things. Sometimes the employess are very much in the know and apart of it but when I'm at the store and happen to thank to John Q employee, they have no idea what I'm talking about.

I know Mach1 people all knew about their involvement. I make sure to tell them thats the only reason I ever heard of them.

All of our local FedEx drivers are independent contractors also leasing their vans or driving for someone that has. Some of them know what's going on in the racing world and some don't, it's a matter of personal preference.
