LAS VEGAS - Second-year NHRA Top Alcohol Funny Car driver Alexis De Joria and the Tequila Patrón/Jack O'Bannon Racing team broke through for their first round win, dipping into the 5.60 zone in the process at this past weekend's SummitRacing.com Nationals at 'The Strip' at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Adding to the success was the fact Tequila Patrón, based in Las Vegas, had executives Ed Brown and Matt Carroll on hand for the weekend.
De Joria, 30, daughter of Patrón Spirits Company and Paul Mitchell Hair Care Products founder John Paul De Joria, qualified the Bob DeVour tuned Dodge Charger No. 15 with a 5.799 second elapsed time at 251.49 mph. In round one, she was paired with Tequila Patrón/Jack O'Bannon Racing teammate Sean O'Bannon, and defeated him with a 5.699 at 252.76 mph to record her first round win and first trip into the 5.6 second zone. In her second round match up with Steve Gasparrelli, De Joria went into tire smoke off the line, giving Gasparrelli the easy win.
"It feels good to finally get a round win at a national event," said De Joria. "It sucks to do it against my teammate Sean, though. I can't say enough about my Crew Chief Bob DeVour. It seems like it gets better and better every race we go to with him. Hopefully that will continue and we'll do even better the next race out."
The next stop on the tour for the Tequila Patrón/Jack O'Bannon Racing Team will be the O'Reilly Summer Nationals at Heartland Park in Topeka, Kan., May 30-Jun. 1.
