TUCSON, Ariz. - After making several solid laps last weekend in Phoenix, NHRA Top Alcohol Funny Car driver Alexis De Joria hopes to build on that during this weekend's Division 7 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at Southwestern International Raceway in Tucson, Ariz. De Joria and the Tequila Patrón/Jack O'Bannon Racing team hope to make progress in small steps, namely making full runs down the track.
De Joria, 30, of Venice, Calif., cites despite not qualifying at last weekend's divisional event in Phoenix, it was a step in the right direction. Team Crew Chief Bob DeVour has also had success at this track, tuning Sean Bellemeur to the winner's circle last year.
"Even though we didn't qualify, last weekend was good from my standpoint," said De Joria, the daughter of Paul Mitchell Hair Care Products and Patrón Spirits Company founder John Paul De Joria. "We're definitely heading in the right direction; the car is making it down the track, we just missed a little bit on the last run in Phoenix. Right now, we're not trying to set any records, we're just trying to get down the track and make full runs. We'll take the rest as it comes."
"I'm excited about running at Tucson again," De Joria continued. "I haven't raced here since I ran Super Comp here a couple years ago. Bob has a pretty good tune up for this track, so I'm looking forward to it."
Qualifying will be ran on Friday with three sessions for the alcohol cars. Final eliminations will conclude the event on Saturday.
