MADISON, Ill./VALDOSTA, Ga. - With assistance from Mother Nature and a couple of jet airplanes, the best laid plans of the AMS/Rage Pro Modified team almost came true - with Josh Hernandez winning one of two ADRL races and Troy Critchley earning the top spot in the AMS Staff Leasing Pro Mod Challenge. After countless hours of planning, the team began its calculated moves across the country, trying to best utilize resources to maintain points positions, win races and offer backing and support to the respective events.
For Critchley who stayed in Madison to try to improve his qualifying position in AMS Pro Mod competition, the venture was entirely successful.
"Yesterday we had some technical difficulties, and I missed the wall by a couple of thousandths of an inch, but after switching an engine, we did the team proud today," Critchley said.
Critchley ran a 6.154/235.76 to claim the No. 1 spot in AMS Pro Mods, the second time this season he has entered into eliminations in the pole position.
"It would have been nice to have the Cinderella story, but it's not over yet. 'Joshie the Rock Star' and the boys have to get back from Valdosta tonight and then we'll hit it hard first thing in the morning.
"I really want to thank Dave and Gidget Wood for making all of this possible - without them, we couldn't even have dreamed of doing all of this," Critchley said.
Hernandez went to the ADRL Georgia Drags with hopes of leaving with two victories, but settled for one. In the rain-delayed final round of the 2006 World Finals, Hernandez beat Dwayne Watkins in a one-race showdown Saturday to finally determine the ADRL World Finals Pro Extreme champion. Hernandez went on to qualify No.2 in the Georgia Drags, but went out first round when his '57 Chevy Bel Air shook and he gave the stripe to Quain Stott, 5.007/101.42 to 3.854 /185.31.
"We're not done yet," said Hernandez as he readied to board the plane back to Illinois.
"We did come here and finish something we started last year - and that was win the World Finals - and that felt really good. Dave [Wood] and Tommy [Lipar] really earned this one - for sure.
"Now, we head back to St. Louis and finish what we started there. I'm really glad Troy ended up on top, and I just hope we will be able to all jump right in and pick up where we left off," he said.
Eliminations are scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. in Madison and continue throughout the day.
