Coughlin No. 1 qualifier for second straight race

LAS VEGAS (April 14) – Three-time world champion Jeg Coughlin Jr. once again has the quickest car in the Pro Stock category, securing the No. 1position at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway with a 6.733-second pass at 204.26 mph.

This is Coughlin's 10th career low qualifying effort and his second in as many races in Victor Cagnazzi's Slammers Ultimate Milk Chevrolet Cobalt. He was also the No. 1 qualifier two weeks ago in Houston.

"We're absolutely pumped about the performance of these Slammers racecars," said Coughlin, who was followed on the ladder by teammate Dave Connolly. "Of course the win is the thing we're all after but it's always exciting to know you have a good, consistent, and very quick racecar heading into eliminations.

"As always, the guys on this crew and back at the shop deserve a lot of credit. They've been on a mission to make these two Cobalts the quickest cars at the racetrack and they're really making some progress. There has been a lot of long hours and busted knuckles to put us here but it's starting to pay off."

Coughlin will lead an extremely talented group into Sunday's elimination action with the possibility of big changes in the weather hanging over everyone's heads.

"If I have my choice I'd like it to stay just how it's been because the guys have the car dialed in perfectly, but the reality is that drag racing is as much about one's ability to adapt to the conditions and the racetrack as it is about going fast," he said. "I'll stack my guys up against anyone and if it rains a bit and cools down, we should be able to step it up just like everyone else.

"We're running great and now it's time to turn some of these great qualifying efforts into wins. Victor needs a few trophies on his desk to remind him why we do this crazy stuff."

Coughlin will begin his quest for a fourth Las Vegas victory at 11 a.m. PDT Sunday. Same-day action will be shown on ESPN2.
