JOLIET, Ill. (June 1) – As a vice president of JEGS Mail Order, John Coughlin has a pivotal role in the company’s involvement in the annual JEGS Allstars race, which is held each year at Route 66 Raceway in Joliet, Ill. Coughlin, along with his brothers, Troy, Mike and Jeg, and their staff, help plan and promote the annual event, which brings together the best sportsman racers from each of NHRA’s seven geographic divisions.
Now, Coughlin will have the rare opportunity to experience the JEGS Allstars from a different perspective as he competes in the event as the North Central Division’s Super Stock representative on Saturday June 7, during the Torco Race Fuel Route 66 Nationals. Racing his familiar yellow and black Chevy Cobalt, Coughlin survived a heated battle against some of the division’s top drivers to earn his spot on the team, which will be competing for a share of the more than $100,000 in posted awards. If he can win the Super Stock title, Coughlin will earn $6,000 and if he is able to lead the Division 3 group to the overall team title, they will split an additional $20,000 bonus.
“Everyday when I walk through the halls of JEGS Mail Order, I see the photos that we have featuring the past Allstars champions and I can’t help but notice how excited and happy they are,” said Coughlin. “From a sponsor’s perspective, I already know how great this race is and now I want to find out what it’s like to win as a racer.”
Before he can determine if he’ll be in the winner’s circle Saturday night as a presenter or a recipient of the special JEGS Allstars trophy, Coughlin, who last qualified for the JEGS Allstars race in 1999, will have to outlast a field that includes national champions, Anthony Bertozzi, Michael Iacono, and Darren Smith.
Bertozzi, the Division 2 representative, is one of the most accomplished sportsman drivers in all of drag racing. Currently ranked No. 2 in the NHRA Super Stock standings, Bertozzi began his year with back-to-back wins at Lucas Oil Series events in Bradenton and Gainesville, Fla.
Iacono also brings with him an impressive résumé that includes the 2007 Stock Eliminator championship and last year’s JEGS Allstars title. Smith, the Division 7 representative, is the reigning NHRA champion, who began his drive to the title with three-consecutive Lucas Oil Series victories.
The rest of the JEGS Allstars Super Stock field includes Bryan Worner (Division 1) Jerry Emmons (Division 4), Michael Mans (Division 5) and Alan Falcone (Division 6).
