Pomona, Calif. - Jeg Coughlin's plan to secure two Wally trophies at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona to kick off his 2007 season with a bang is going along perfectly so far.
Coughlin secured the No. 1 qualifying position in his JEGS.com Super Stock Chevrolet Cavalier and has already survived three rounds of eliminations in the category to set himself up perfectly for a strong Sunday charge.
In Pro Stock, Coughlin has been a picture of consistency in his Slammers Ultimate Milk Chevrolet Cobalt, running a string of 6.6-second passes to qualify sixth overall in the sport's toughest professional category.
Racing a variety of different cars, Coughlin's Super Stock C-Modified Chevrolet Cavalier has been a winner from the start, running an 8.68-second pass to qualify No. 1 and plowing through the field in the first three rounds of competition. Currently, Coughlin is one of just 10 cars left in contention for the title.
"It's a performance-driven class and so far our performance has been strong," Coughlin said. "The JEGS crew has done an outstanding job of setting this car up for me and it's been an absolute pleasure to drive all weekend. We've got four rounds to go to get that trophy and we'll be doing everything we can to get the win."
Coughlin's Pro Stocker has been running like a bracket car, posting a pair of 6.66s, a 6.67, and a 6.70 in the four professional qualifying sessions. His best run came Saturday morning when he posted a 6.661 at 207.98 mph. He'll race two-time Pro Stock champion Jim Yates in Sunday's opening session of eliminations. Yates qualified 11th with a best of 6.671 at 207.43 mph.
"It's always exciting when you have a consistently quick car in Pro Stock," Coughlin said. "Our team owner Victor Cagnazzi has worked tirelessly to make sure we have the very best of everything, from the crew guys, to the chassis builders, to the guys in the engine shop, on down to all the components we use, he's left nothing to chance and it's showing on the racetrack.
"I like our position at this race and I think the season ahead is going to be very exciting. First things first, we need to go out there tomorrow and do some racing. The field is extremely tight top to bottom so we'll need to be perfect every round. I think this Slammers team is up for the challenge."
