DELAWARE, Ohio (Sept. 18) – From the ultra quick Top Dragster and Top Sportsman classes to the Jr. Drag racing series designed to give youngsters an introduction to drag racing, there will be lots of yellow and black on display at National Trail Raceway during this weekend’s JEGS NHRA Northern SPORTSnationals as there will be five Team JEGS entries in action.
During this weekend’s event, which is one of three JEGS-backed SPORTSnationals events that are designed to showcase NHRA Lucas Oil Series sportsman racing, John will race in Top Dragster and Super Stock while his brother Mike will be looking to claim his third consecutive Top Sportsman title in Columbus. In addition, third generation Coughlin racer Troy Jr., will be competing in Super Comp category with his Jegs.com dragster and the newest member of the JEGS team, John’s son, Cody Coughlin, will be racing in the Jr. Dragster class.
“Our pit area is going to be a very busy place this weekend,” said John. “Hopefully, we’re all still racing on Sunday afternoon because that means that we’ll have some of our cars in the final rounds. If any one of us is fortunate enough to win this race, it will be cause for a big celebration.
“It’s going to be busy but it should also be a lot of fun because that’s the name of the game in these [SPORTSnationals] races,” John said. “My brother and I haven’t raced too much this year so we’re really looking forward to seeing a lot of our old friends here.”
Mike Coughlin claimed the Top Sportsman title the last two years in his 200-mph JEGS.com Chevy Cobalt and will be looking to extend his win streak this year. Coughlin has had incredible success in SPORTSnationals events as he is also a former champion of the JEGS NHRA Cajun SPORTSnationals event which is contested in Belle Rose, La. each year.
“This is our home track and it is also my favorite track,” said Mike. “For some reason I seem to do well here. I guess it’s because I’m comfortable racing at home. Hopefully that trend will continue this year. It will also be really exciting to watch Troy Jr. race in Super Comp and Cody run his Jr. Dragster. It’s really cool to see the next generation of Coughlin racers start to get their feet wet.”
Collectively, the Coughlin family has won 10 times at National Trail Raceway, which was the site of an NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series event until 2007. In addition to his back-to-back Top Sportsman wins, Mike has collected two victories in Super Comp. John has claimed three Columbus titles in Pro Stock Truck, Super Stock, and Super Gas while four-time NHRA champion Jeg Coughlin has claimed three wins.
