Well with Jet-A at over $5.00/gallon on average.... and Gasoline at $3.00 per gallon...this doesn't surprise me. We all know it's coming. Everyone's feeling the pinch right now. So what's next..... a Hybrid Top Fueler?? A Flex Fuel Funny Car? A Battery Powered 300+ mph run?

Nitromethane (CH3NO2) is produced by treating propane with nitric acid at 350 - 450 degrees Centigrade. I'm not a petroleum expert, so I'm not sure how you make propane. I have a hunch that it is either derived as part of the cracking process of crude oil or from natural gas - both of which come from those expensive holes in the ground.
This price increase seems excessive, but I'm amazed that some non NHRA approved suppliers are able to hold the price line. Google "nitromethane" -

Well, I'd rather be wrong but it sure seems like there's trouble ahead. Mainly, for the fuel teams due to the increasing costs of nitro and transportation costs. Also the high price of gasoline may keep some spectators home too. I did see that the March Meet was pretty successful but how much higher will the cost of gas get before people start eliminating entertainment of all forms?

Rich you must have forgotten back in 1991 when the Angus plant exploded and the Price of Nitro got as high as $70 a gallon for over 6-8 months! NHRA had even discussed making the Alky classes the headliner because of the cost.
If gas should go to $4+ per gallon is there anything any of us could do about it? All this talk about trouble ahead, who's going to determine when Drag racing's in trouble? When the Sat/Sun stands at most NHRA races are maybe half-full and we see 12-13 car Fields in TF/FC, then I will conceed that Drag racing's in a world of hurt.
Fair enough Joe. Sorry for the doom and gloom, but 4.00 per gallon is unchartered waters and to give you an example, I use to race out of town quite a bit. At least half of my schedule were out of state races. Not this year. We may be going out of state once this season if that. With a pickup getting 10 MPG towing we'll have no choice but to scale back. I'm sure you will see the same thing happen to other sportsman racers. But we all know there are a lot of guys out there where money is no object, unfortunately I'm not one of them.
If I was the local dragstrip promoter I would come up with some low cost feature events because the entertainment dollar is shrinking. I don't know how a lot of people even make it through the month. We're in difficult times.
As far as the big show goes, I wasn't aware of that ever happening and I suppose if the pros can survive that they can survive anything but this current situation certainly doesn't help as it pulls another chair out in this financial game of musical chairs. NHRA needs to take better care of the pros and alcohol guys to prevent less then full fields.

I think this is just a way to justify the increase. I have been told that there is no such homeland security act and the fact that know one has provided a regulation number verifies that!!! All government regulations have a number, no number, no regulation!

The result is two long and dry documents in which you will see the 400lb limit on nitro (and several dozen other chemicals) listed, along with handling and documentation requirements.

I have a thought on how to save a few bucks on your Nitro bill. If I remember right, I think Johnny West used to have a set-up on his own Funny Car where he did the burnout on Alcohol, backed up, and then made his run on Nitro. Not sure if it would work with the current big pumps but it's an idea.

I think NHRA should raise the ticket price half a buck per person and give the money to the nitro racers to cover the adl. cost. I will pay gladly, Screw the warmups and burnout on Alky, real dragrace fans want NITRO and lots of it!!!!!
