Comp eliminator racers and fans were treated to some spectacular racing at the Texas Motorplex, just outside Dallas this past weekend. A freshly scraped and groomed race track met the racers as the second stop of the Lucas Oil drag racing series for NHRA’s division 4 rolled into town. Mother Nature got in on the act with dry, crystal blue skies and temperatures in the upper sixties, conditions very conducive to making horsepower. With over $4700.00 in Comp Cash Reward bonus money up for grabs for the event, it promised to be an exciting weekend for the full field of racers,As qualifying got under way for the weekends racing action, the track started to come into its own very quickly, and the usually narrow grove of the “Tex Plex” became wider than normal and very aggressive for those that wanted to apply their power. With 36 cars on hand and a .402 under bump spot once qualifying was completed, competitors knew that this race weekend wasn’t going to be an easy one. Recent Jegs Cajun SportsNationals champ Glenn Self battled with Scott Benham for the number one qualifying spot, finally unleashing a .702 under lap in the final Saturday afternoon qualifying session to claim the Hughes performance low qualifier bonus, as well as taking home the divisions Comp Cash Reward $100.00 check as well.
As eliminations got underway on Sunday, it became readily apparent that conditions were prime, as the B/SMA cars of Ernest Watson & Royce Freeman both ventured into permanent CIC territory with runs .60 under the index as the first two pair cleared the finish line. The only saving grace for many in the opening round was seven red lights and a couple of very late lights as well. In the final pair of the first round, Stephen Rosen’s six cylinder dragster sounded like a super comp racer womping the throttle the last few hundred feet of the track in his defeat of late leaving Jody Holland in the four cylinder L/AA Opel.
Round two saw several drivers nudging into the CIC side of Comp racing, but featured Chase Williams new PST continuing to settle into a groove by taking out low qualifier Glenn Self, this after dispatching reigning D4 champ Craig Bourgeois in round one’s biggest upset. But the biggest highlight of the round was the race between Adam Hickey & Cordis Johnson. The Super Mod cars left with almost identical lights, only Hickey’s B&B Cobalt took an immediate turn toward the tree. Johnson’s chute then shook loose and was fully blossomed by the two hundred foot mark allowing Adam the opportunity to straighten out his ride, get back on the throttle and chase Cordis down for the win by the slim margin of .0085.
By the end of the third round, Rodger Brogdon in Steve Kent’s G/A and Royce Freeman’s B/SMA were both suffering serious CIC damage while Joey Tanksley and Scott Benham were basically unscathed, setting up some great semi final pairings, Brogdon taking on his engine builders Race Engine Development team and Freeman taking on Tanksley’s potent C/D.
Freeman’s day came to an end in the semis with a red light against Tanksley, while Brogdons run through eliminations ended when Scott Benham took a better shot at the tree and held off the former division champs top end charge. Both Benham and Tanksley rolled into their final round confrontation with only a .02 adjustment to their index. In the final round, Benham picked up the Comp Cash Reward $1500.00 bonus check when Tanksley’s dragster rattled the tires at the hit, inflicting damage in the clutch can and forcing the driver of the Kent Services and Trucking dragster to coast to a stop just past the finish line.
With great weather and even better racing, the competitors in Dallas had the opportunity to split the Comp Cash Reward bonus purse for the event and come that much closer to qualifying for the $25,000.00 bonus purse to be added to the winner’s check at the last LODRS event of the season in Noble, OK. Racers must compete at four of the available six events leading into the final race of the season to be eligible. With a field of 36 cars at this week’s event, many took advantage of that opportunity. The next stop for racers to earn a Comp Cash Reward bonus check occurs May 16-18 at Houston Raceway Park for round three of the division 4 2008 LODRS tour.
