I saw someone commented asking about the 1992 Summernationals Sportsman Challenge. (I think that's you on youtube?) A brief rundown. Not all events aired a Sportsman Challenge show. I know TNN used to air a sportsman edition of American Sports Cavalcade. I have part of the 1993 Atlanta show on tape. I'm not sure when the show started, but up until 1994 they only aired Top Alcohol Dragster, Top Alcohol Funny Car, and Pro Stock Bike. It was in 1994 that they started to air all sportsman finals and the Pro Stock Bikes got their own 30 minute show on ESPN. I don't think that the Summernationals sportsman ever got any air time unfortunately. I know looking at my February 1994 National Dragster it was not on the list for 1994. The TNN live shows usually included the alcohol finals as part of the NHRA Today just before the pro finals.
Also of note, in 1994 there were 19 national events (18 for points, 1 for money) and of those 19 7 were aired live on TNN and another 4 were aired on same day delay on ESPN that night. The other 8 races had anywhere from a 1 to 3 week delay. Amazing how much coverage we get now instantly over what we used to. Yet in my personal opinion, it seems the quality of that programming was much better.
