CBS Sports Spectacular

"Problem Child" ran a 3.488 ET at 251 mph that they should be showing. I never even heard of drag boat racing until Gil Rebilas took me out to shoot it last year.

Sure it's not 4.48? I know they run 1000' like the cars do, but a 3.48 1/8 mile time for those boats would be very slow!!

Got this off DragBoat Alley

Comment from Problem Child;

Once raced light" that's a good one. It's seems the numbers we thought were way out of reach are not quiet that far after all. The bar keeps getting raised higher and higher and who knows where the heck we'll end up. Kirkland and Scotty wore us out a couple times this year with a 4.58 at the opener and then an astonishing 4.52 in San Angelo. We thought running 60's and 70's was plenty before that. Shortening the track just shortened the "fuse" so to speak. We are now running 2 tenths quicker to the 660' then ever before. the runs this weekend were a 2.52 and 2.54. talk about pullin' some G's. This however is much harder on the parts than ever and the maintenance cost is excruciating. It's gunna get even worse when Amos gets goin' again. Thanks for the kind words, we are trying our best not to be "show stoppers"

My bad.....I saw them starting from a dead stop from a top end view. Only when I viewed a race from the starting line did I notice how far back the rope was from the actual start line. :o

Alan,

I watched the event and enjoyed your work, as always. I must say that the slow pace of racing (in the telecast) became boring. Plus, without familiar brands (Chevrolet, Ford, Dodge, etc.) it all eventually looked pretty similar. I don't see that sport drawing larger viewership on television...

Being that my 1st Boat Drag race was at Columbiaville, Michigan in Aug, 1973. Things have come a long way.
Yes the coverage we saw today was two weeks old. It was still on a major network. The facilities that Mr. Lucas has built in MO. looks 1st class and racing a boat on a closed course compared to on a lake or river is better for racers and fans.
The show was only an hour long but, the all the Pro Classes had half the boats.
Thanks Alan; You did a great job.
