(10-11-2007) ENNIS, TX – There are lots of things going on at Charles Carpenter’s Charlotte, NC auto repair center. However, none of those distractions could keep him from taking a couple extra days to get focused for the biggest race Carpenter has entered in a long time.
“I decided to take a couple days to myself before we came to Dallas,” said Carpenter, who sits fourth in the Flowmaster American Drag Racing League Pro Nitrous Battle for the Belts standings. “My son and I actually left Charlotte Sunday night and made a little excursion to my friend Buddy Johnson’s house on Lake Limestone,” Carpenter. “It’s been a lot of fun, as anyone that knows Buddy can attest to. It’s honestly my only vacation of the year, and it couldn’t come at a better time.”
Johnson not only assisted in a little pre-race R&R, but also put up funding for Carpenter’s long haul to Dallas. His Buddy’s Automotive Concepts car dealership and website, BuddysCars.com, will be featured on Carpenter’s unmistakable ’55 Chevy for a special one-race promotion.
“It’s great to get more heavily involved with a guy like Charles,” said the Bryan, TX based entrepreneur. “We have been friends for a long time, and ‘Buddy’s’ has been on the bumper of Charles’ car for years, but this is the biggest thing we have ever done. The whole team is really excited about it.”
After the past week, Carpenter definitely needed the time off. Two weekends ago, he went to Orangeburg Dragstrip in South Carolina to do a little testing prior this weekend’s AlphaTrade.com World Finals at the Texas Motorplex.
“We went to Orangeburg to race, but to test some things I have been wanting to try as well,” Carpenter said. “We were trying to get the car to 330’ quicker, but tore up everything from the radiator back in the process. We spent all week freshening the motor, and repairing the clutch, transmission, rear end, and wheeliebars. Fortunately, Kelly “The Welder” Campbell made a stop by the shop and repaired a broken spot on the chassis as well. I hate to tear my stuff up, and I don’t think I have ever done more damage in just a few passes. Needless to say, I’ve had better weeks.”
Carpenter believes there could be a bright side to all that work. “At least everything will be fresh going into this race,” he said. “I sure would hate to have any of those components fail here in Dallas, so hopefully the car is in the best shape it has been all year and all that is behind us.”
“This is one of the biggest races of my career,” Carpenter continued. A quick look at the Pro Modified history books shows that that is saying something. “To come out this season, win two national events, and be in contention for a championship is something I would have never dreamed could be possible back in January,” he said. “This has been almost a fairy-tale year for me. It has been rejuvenating, and capping it off the right way in Dallas is all I can think about.”
Carpenter has his eyes on a World Finals event victory, but the Battle for the Belts is what really has his attention.
“We have a tough first round matchup in Terry Housley,” said Carpenter. “Terry is killer on the tree and is the only guy out here that has been racing these cars as long as I have, so it should be a good matchup.”
If Carpenter advances past the first round, look out. Once out of the first round, the Pro Mod legend hasn’t lost a round of racing all season.
