Johnson, Capps, Stewart, Matzke, Hocking, Parmelee, Skoglund score Bullring victories Saturday at Las Vegas Motor Speedway

LAS VEGAS – Justin Johnson of Las Vegas scored his second consecutive Super Late Model victory of the 2007 season at the Bullring at Las Vegas Motor Speedway Saturday night. Ron Capps won the NHRA Funny Car driver Thunder Roadster match race and Tim Skoglund of Fresno, Calif., claimed the trophy for the 30-lap USAC Ford Focus Midget Series feature. Craig Stewart won the 25-lap IMCA Modified feature and Roger Hocking won the 20-lap Thunder Roadster feature. Brian Matzke won his second Charger feature of the year and Nick Parmelee recorded the win in the 20-lap Legends Cars main event.

Super Late Models: The $200-to-win Budweiser Fast Dash was won by Jimmy Parker Jr. Parker was last week’s apparent winner until his car failed to pass post-race inspection. Parker started on the pole and was among fast company: he was flanked by 2006 champion Scott Gafforini and followed in the second row by Justin Johnson, who was awarded the April 8 victory. Parker led the first 14 laps until Johnson passed him coming out of the fourth turn. Johnson survived two caution periods, built up almost a full-sraightaway lead and scored his second consecutive Super Late Model victory. Travis Swalwell finished second and opening-night winner Tom Lovelady was third. Eight-lap Super Late Model heats were won by Dustin Ash and Derek Frolich.

Legends Cars: The Legends Cars feature was perhaps the most exciting of the night. Bear Rzesnowiecky appeared to be the favorite to win the feature after taking the eight-car, eight-lap Budweiser Fast Dash with ease. Rzesnowiecky led the first three laps until Tom Lovelady got underneath the second-generation driver to take the lead. Rzesnowiecky battled back on lap 4 to regain the lead. The pair waged a torrid battle and pulled away from the rest of the pack. They swapped the lead again on laps 9 and 10 but disaster struck on lap 13 when they both spun in Turn 4. Johnny Morrissey inherited the lead only to relinquish it to Nick Parmelee on lap 14. Nick’s lap-14 pass proved to be the winning move of the race and he went on to win his first Bullring Legends Cars feature of the 2007 season. Morrissey finished second and Ken Neff was third. All four have done their fair share of wheel-banging on short tracks - T.J. used to run an IMCA Modified car on off weekends and Cruz, Gary and Ron have all competed in open-wheeled cars of various types.

I'm not familiar with the "Thunder Roadsters," but from the picture they look like retro-styled replicas of the old front-engined Champ cars. Undoubtedly another Humpy Wheeler creation, along the lines of the Legend cars - look like "real race cars," with affordable spec engines.

The "Bull Ring" is a paved oval, by the way - it would be fun to see those four square off in the dirt somewhere.

Hey, I are a good guesser - now that looks like a real Champ car to me!!! I guess that dates me, but everybody already knows I'm somewhat older than dirt anyway.
