When persistent drizzle lengthened everyone's Saturday at Maple Grove Raceway, but also shortened the professional workload to one session instead of two, Phil Burkart knew his team was going to put a stout tune-up in his special edition Havoline Chevy. They did just that, but went just a hair over-center and smoked the tires on Saturday afternoon. Burkart will now enter the race from the 10th spot and will face points leader Ron Capps in round one.
"The guys showed me the computer, and the car was just a micron away from putting a huge run on the board," Burkart said. "But we know 'almost' is good for absolutely nothing out here. We all have a long list of 'shoulda, coulda, woulda' runs we've made, but this one was just a hair away from making it, and that at least gives the guys something to work from. We put two 4.79s on the board yesterday, and I know we can run quicker than that. We're just going to come out for round one, whenever that is, and try to stun somebody. I hope the weather holds for Sunday, because we're all about tired of this gray sky and the wet stuff."
