Memphis, TN (8/19/06) -- Though the two men in question are really just two competitors on the NHRA tour, Phil Burkart and Jim Head do have a connection via Worsham Racing. In 1999, Head and his Top Fuel organization joined the Checker, Schuck's, Kragen stable as teammates to Del Worsham. The next year, CSK made the move to field two Funny Cars, and Burkart is the third driver to pilot the additional Worsham flopper. On Sunday, Burkart and Head (who now drives a Funny Car on the POWERade tour) will face off in round one. Burkart will race from the No. 10 spot.
"We made a real nice lap on Friday night, but then we struggled during today's first run just like everyone," Burkart said. "The afternoon run here was just blistering, and very miserable. Things kind of slowed down before the late session, and whether that was just a coincidence or by design I don't know, but we actually got to run in pretty good conditions tonight. We went end to end again, but we wanted to go quicker.
"We're in the bottom half, but I really don't think there's a lane advantage here, at least not through qualifying. We'll just go up there to race the track, do our own deal like we always do, and see how we stack up. Right now, everyone in this whole camp is pretty quiet and pretty down, because the boss didn't make the show. We have to take the Madman Murray car out there tomorrow and carry the ball for the team."
