<p>(8-28-08)New York City, NY - For the second time in 2008, Vinny Budano guided the Scott Shafiroff-owned 68 Camaro to a victory within the Pro Street division of NMCA this past weekend. Held at Milan, Michigan's historic 1/4 mile, Budano got past Mark Micke in the finals of the second annual JE Pistons NMCA Muscle Car Nationals, held on August 22-24.
Budano, a 3-time and reigning NMCA Pro Street Champion, stopped Jeff Lutz, Noel Felton and took a bye-run in the semis en route to a show down with the Pro Charger-equipped Camaro of Mark Micke - which mirrored the final round from Bowling Green last May - the outcome also the same. In Sunday's final from Milan, Micke stumbled at the hit while Budano cruised to a 6.46 @ 194mph. "We had some adversity to overcome at this event, so we're really pleased to come away with the win," commented Budano. "My brother, Frank, and my cousin Anthony weren't able to attend, and with my son, Vincent, under the weather, we were racing with a short and wounded crew," added Budano.
Further adversity that Team Shafiroff had to address in Milan is the constant difficulty of finding enough time to test. "Due to the lack of testing because of the business, we sometimes have to test while we race," says Budano. Tweaking a new manifold was on the experimental agenda in Milan, and it threw one curve ball after another. Budano laughingly compared the Milan event and its "testing while you race" approach to having a new girlfriend. "At the end of the day, we honestly didn't know what the car wanted, and still don't," laughed Budano.
Team owner, Scott Shafiroff, was absent in Michigan, electing to spend an enjoyable day boating. "When Scott isn't with us I call him after every round and give him an update," says Budano. "I let him know that we were still marching on, and he was quite elated and perhaps a little surprised at the news of our victory," added Vinny.
A good luck charm from home never hurts, and Vinny had one riding with him every step of the way in Milan. "Before I left for this event, Fran and her 3 daughters all wrote me a message on my helmet," says Vinny. "Overcoming adversity gets a little easier when you've got that kind of support", says Budano.
Team Shafiroff will return to action with a local stop in Atco scheduled for September 6-7. The event, "Outlaws at Atco," is a special 2-day attraction that features 1/4 mile racing on Saturday, with 1/8 mile competition on Sunday.
