CAYUGA, ONTARIO (June 14, 2009) – It was an afternoon of racing attrition, but Bruce Boland claimed his first PMRA victory of the year in the Fifth Annual Family Weekend Spectacular at the Cayuga Dragway of Toronto Motorsports Park.
Boland, driving the B&B Racing 1967 Chevy Nova, met with Mark Nielsen of Brantford, Ontario in the final, but Nielsen could not engage reverse gear in his 1968 Camaro after his burnout, giving the win to Boland.
Boland ran a solo final with a 6.377-second, 221.78-mph pass.
Ironically, Nielsen met Boland in the final only after his semi-final opponent, Eric Latino of Scarborough, Ontario, could not make the round after suffering engine woes.
Boland was to meet with Adam Croker of Perth, Australia, in his semi-final, but Croker damaged the engine in his new G-Force Race Cars Camaro in the previous round and could not make the semi.
“It was one of those weekends,” said Boland after the final. “We didn’t go fast but we went steady.”
Boland, the 2007 and 2008 Pro Modified Racing Association Point Award Series Champion, qualified fourth in the eight-car field. He eliminated Jason Kalso of Clarkston, Michigan in the first round, while Nielsen, who qualified third, bested the 1941 Willys of Jeff Roth of Kitchener, Ontario.
In other first round racing, Croker, number one alternate, eliminated number two qualifier Ike Maier in his 1963 Corvette. And Latino, in his 1938 Chevy, who was also an alternate, took out number one qualifier Tony Piselli of Woodbridge, Ontario in the first round.
“We didn’t change a thing all weekend,” Boland continued. “There are still lots left in the car. We’re still learning.”
Boland was also quick to offer his thanks to his team.
“I want to give a big-time thanks to Mark Dochstader and Backwoods Bobcat Service & Excavating Inc. this weekend, and also to the rest of my crew.”

- Former PMRA competitor Larry Sinke of Welland, Ontario was at the event, helping Bruce Boland.
- Two-time PMRA event winner Joe Boniferro of Niagara Falls, Ontario, was sporting a new Hemi engine in his Smokin’ Joe’s Avenger, and although he qualified for the race, he opted to not compete, citing possible engine woes.
- For the first time in PMRA history, an event was comprised of racers from three countries, with Australian Adam Croker competing in his new G-Force Race Cars Camaro against the regular contingent of Canadian and US teams.
- Adam Croker set low time of the meet with a 6.102-second pass, while Ike Maier posted top speed with a 230.65-mph clocking.
- With his win, Bruce Boland leads the Pro Modified Racing Association Championship Point Award Series Standings with 585, Ike Maier is second with 581, and Mark Nielsen is third with 563 points.
