Going into the last day of Pro Stock Motorcycle qualifying for the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta Dragway, Tom Bradford and The Sportsman Channel Buell were on the outside looking in. "The bottom line is, our woes are still in the clutch," said Bradford, who has been unable to test so far this year in the frosty environs of his native Wisconsin. "It's really just a deal were we need to make runs, but a week and a half ago we had 7 inches of snow in our area. So it's just not been very cooperative for us to get that done."
qualifying round 1
12th Tom Bradford left lane 7.176 at 186.41 mph
qualifying round 2
17th Tom Bradford right lane 7.149 at 187.03 mph
Bradford improved in round 2 but slipped backwards in the order.
qualifying round 3
16th Tom Bradford left lane 7.117 at 188.49 mph
Tom put the Buell back in the field in Q3 with a time good enough to hold up through the final round, which was fought against strong headwinds.
qualifying round 4
16th Tom Bradford right lane 7.133 at 184.70 mph
"It's been a hectic weekend so far, but we're in," said Bradford. "I'm happy, but not happy. Obviously, the competition out here is just unbelievable this year. It's getting to the point where if you make the program, you really need to be excited.
"We really had a good run going there in the final round, but we were fighting that severe headwind. We picked up 3/100ths in the eighth mile from our 7.11 run, but just couldn't carry it through once we got up on the big end. The wind just stifled the run. So we're feeling pretty good. We definitely feel that was a 7.0 run. We ran a 1.08 60 foot, we were third quick to the 330, and 7th quick for that session. So we're starting to feel like we're back up where we belong, although it didn't ultimately show it on that pass. But we know what we've got going into tomorrow.
"We've got all fresh powerplants and the motors are running great. I want to thank Rob Schopf for getting those finished for us for this weekend. We run Angelle (Sampey) in the morning, and we've had fairly good results against the Army team the last couple races." True enough. Bradford beat Antron Brown in round 1 at the Gators and again in round 2 in Houston, though Sampey avenged her teammate's loss in the next round.
"So we're just gonna do our thing. Jim Schneider's getting on top of the clutch and I'm feeling comfortable with my riding duties, so I'm looking for a good day. We've got some guests coming from the Atlanta Sportsman Channel office, so we're looking forward to meeting and greeting and entertaining those folks and whatever clients they're bringing with them. So all-in-all it's a great weekend to be down here in Atlanta where the weather's nice."
