<P> (10-8-08) Bluebaugh Racing’s Team AutoTrader skillfully claimed victory of the West Coast Hot Rod Associations (WCHRA) 2008 Pro Street Championship from the underdog position this past weekend at the Sacramento Raceway October 4th & 5th, 2008. With high hopes and competitive spirit, Bluebaugh started the event 28 points behind the FigSpeed Stratus of Art Hodges and only several points ahead of Tim Henry in his Conquest Concrete Firebird. In order to take the Championship, Bluebaugh had to qualify the AutoTrader Monte Carlo better than Hodges and run more rounds, while combating the possibility that Henry could also steel the prize at even the slightest slip.

Bluebaugh said this victory would not have been possible with out help from Tom Nelson of Team Performance Products who assisted Team AutoTrader in making the nearly 1600 mile round trip haul to the race. Bluebaugh and Crew Chief Deborah Woodard started the 2008 season on a wing and a prayer wondering if the team would even make the whole season after the expense to ready the AutoTrader Monte Carlo just one year ago. Both Bluebaugh and Woodard agreed, we have just been determined to make it work together and help from our sponsors and supporters have really made the difference. “Looking back over everything we have endured this year, winning the WCHRA Pro Street Championship is just a fantastic and unbelievable accomplishment for the AutoTrader Team.” We could never have imagined at the start that we would take a Championship in the first year with AutoTrader Monte Carlo.

Crew Chief Woodard said this was really a tuners Championship battle as the Sacramento Raceway proved a traction challenge for the high horsepower Pro Street Class from the transition through the top end. I finally resorted to purposely clothes lining the clutch, which has been contrary to our strategy of trying not to burn through the clutch. The end result paid off in combination with Bluebaugh’s ability to drive the car through just about any condition.

Bluebaugh took a good jump on the competition for the Championship run early, qualifying the AutoTrader Monte Carlo in the second position with a 6.56 @ 215.95 mph. Woodard said by the end of the qualifying day we were excited with anticipation, counting each point as if it were gold, and planning our strategy for race day. In round one, Team AutoTrader drew the Blown 55 Chevy of veteran Racer Monte Berney and in good racing gesture, Bluebaugh helped Berney service his clutch for the match up. As the two lined up tension was high for Team AutoTrader as so much more was hanging on each round. Going out could simply not happen. Bluebaugh took the jump at the light pedaling the car to a win with a 6.740 @ 195.41 over Berney who shook the tires and coasted to a 9.657 @ 92.66 mph allowing Bluebaugh to advance. The Team as well caught a lucky break as Hodges went out in round one leaving only Henry still in the running. The semi-final round brought the final run for the Championship with Bluebaugh against Henry and lane choice advantage to Bluebaugh. At this point it was anyone’s race. It was going to be about who could get down the track. The winner would take home the prestigious season’s Championship and the loser would have to wait another year being only so close. Crowds gathered at the starting line cheering for their favorite driver and with high anticipation of who would be this season’s winner. Henry caught the hole shot advantage running ahead of Bluebaugh through the 60 ft. mark, but the AutoTrader Monte Carlo made its move by the 330 quickly reeling in Henry and taking a strong lead. It was a wild pedal fest to the finish with Bluebaugh coming out victorious for his driving skill with a 6.763 @ 200.00 mph over Henry’s 7.444 @ 167.82 mph. Bluebaugh said the car has really come a long way this year to do this well. We are just going to keep moving forward and Team AutoTrader definitely has a bright future. The Team plans to include the WCHRA in next season’s schedule of racing events.
