Bluebaugh Goes to the Finals in Bakersfield, Qualifies Number One

Bluebaugh Racing’s Team AutoTrader scrambled to make it to the West Coast Hot Rod Associations (WCHRA) Holders Nationals at the Auto Club Famoso Raceway in Bakersfield June 7-8, 2008 on last minute notice. Bluebaugh received a call late Sunday the week prior from Tom Nelson of Team Performance Products, Inc. requesting attendance for the event and all remaining events for the WCHRA season. A decision was made to load up the AutoTrader Monte Carlo and head for Bakersfield after some negotiations with Nelson who sponsored the team last year.

Crew Chief Deborah Woodard, said this is very exciting for us as we have run some of our fastest passes in Bakersfield, which is primarily home for the WCHRA. It proved to be great weekend. We qualified the AutoTrader Monte Carlo in the number one position with the first pass off the trailer. Bluebaugh ran short of the finish line with a 6.55 @ 212.46 mph on a soft tune up, which held good through the qualifying day. Woodard said, we have been working hard to maintain consistency with getting this car down the track. Being able to get it right on the first run just really indicates that we are headed in the right direction.

In round one, the team faced Dan Myers in his Blown Alcohol Chevy Truck. Myers snuck into the WCHRA event late after winning the West Coast Pro Mod event in Sacramento the night before looking for quick cash on his way home. Bluebaugh and Team AutoTrader were not about to let him have his way. Bluebaugh took Meyers off the line and never looked back running a smooth and consistent 6.54 @ 216.91 to Myers 7.963 @ 142.72 mph.

In the final round, Bluebaugh faced Tim Henry in his Con-quest Concrete sponsored Firebird. It was a battle of Nitrous cars for the win on a very hot 140 degree track. Both lanes appeared equal as Woodard contemplated which lane might prove best for the AutoTrader Monte Carlo. Henry, who is fairly new on the scene proved razor sharp off the line putting a hole shot on Bluebaugh ultimately costing Team AutoTrader the win. Both cars struggled with the hot track on the big end. Bluebaugh said, I was right there, the tires would hook and then spin causing the back end of the AutoTrader Monte Carlo to sashay just a bit. Henry commented that he too got slightly out of the groove and had a struggle to pull his Conquest-Concrete Firebird straight. It was neck and neck in the finish with Henry taking the win by a very narrow .0266 with a 6.598 at 213.87 mph to Bluebaugh’s quicker but losing 6.590 @ 216.76 mph.
