BLOWN FUEL LINE ENDS WORSHAM FRIDAY BID

Del Worsham appeared to be on his way to a major improvement on Friday's lone qualifying run here in Pomona, until a fuel line blew off around 900-feet, slowing him to a 4.974 at only 261.37 mph. Now in the 13th spot, his is the first car outside the provisional field under the new qualifying format. Worsham, and nine other drivers, will effectively start Saturday unranked, all with an equal chance to get into the field under identical conditions.

"We're lucky it didn't catch on fire, to tell you the truth," Worsham said. "I knew what had happened, and I was watching the fire windows because I really thought it would light up, but fortunately it didn't.

Under the old system, we'd come out here in 13th spot tomorrow, but now that we're 13th in the new system, we're really just one car in a 10-car group that's trying to bust its way into the show. To be honest, though, in this particular case, I don't think it's really any different. Here in Pomona, if you go into Saturday 13th and think a 4.96 is going to get you in, you're dreaming, so regardless of the qualifying set-up, we just have to get it to run end-to-end and we'll not only end up solidly in, we'll be in the top half."
