MILAN, Mich. - If there's such a thing as home field advantage in drag racing, IHRA Torco's CompetitionPlus.com Pro Stock driver Bob Bertsch and his Rislone Engine Treatment sponsored team hope to use it during this weekend's Suzuki Motor City Nationals presented by GM Performance and Heritage Newspapers at Milan Dragway in Milan, Mich. Bertsch lives just down the road in Willis, Mich., and would love to win his first Ironman in his own backyard.
Bertsch enters the event currently tenth in points coming off career-best numbers two weeks ago in Epping, N.H. Bertsch lost a close race in round one despite running a career-best 6.362 at 219.72 mph. The strong numbers can be attributed to a freshened Jon Kaase Ford powerplant.
"We're very encouraged by the run we made in the first round in Epping," said Bertsch. "We missed on a few things in qualifying, which put us behind. Jon Kaase is giving us good horsepower, so we should be able to step right back up. Our goal at every race is to qualify in the top half, and hopefully we can do that again this weekend."
"I only live 15 minutes from the track, but this is the only chance I get all year to race here," Bertsch added. "It will be good to see some familiar faces. It would really be great to put this Rislone Ford Mustang in the winner's circle here at my home track."
In addition to racing at home, Rislone/Bar's Leaks President Bob Mermuys and his brother Fred will be on hand, along with associate sponsor Share Capital's President Alan Sasson. Bertsch hopes to reward their support with a strong showing while they are in attendance.
"We give 100% to win and do the best at every event," commented Bertsch. "Our sponsors don't get a chance to go to every race, so since they're here this weekend, we're going to try real hard to go the extra mile for them. Rislone/Bar's Leaks and our associate sponsors Share Capital and Ram Clutches really help us to race at this level, and we would love to reward them this weekend while they are here."
Qualifying begins on Friday, with two more sessions on Saturday. Final eliminations will conclude the event on Sunday.
