I was watching barret/jackson auction on speed t.v, and they had a mike ashley funny car on the block , with proceeds going to daryl gwyns charity. Usually they tell the viewer a little about the car, not so this time around. I have seen this same car on the block before(last year). My question is this.I s this car still turn.key. same motor, chassis, chute, the whole nine yards? Or has it been gutted, maybe for safety reasons, or insurance liability? I believe it sold for 75 grand. Any thoughts on this. Thanks Mike.

in your link it states " the car is NOT setup to run" it may be the original car but the engine is probably just an empty junk block with used up blower. no actual useable parts....just my assumption

We may be getting into splitting frog hairs here, but a big deal was made at the time of the original auction that it was the chassis, body, engine, rear-end, wheels etc. that were in/on the car when it won Indy in '07. Would it start? I have no idea ... but it is certainly not one of the show car fleet gussied up for the auction block.

well we may be... I'm no expert on those things.. just wouldn't think they would sell something that any shmoe could get in and possibly drive!!...but then again if you can afford to buy it then you can afford to play with it!! ;)

I wouldn't say that...it's one thing to buy a nitro car, but it's a whole another thing actually trying to race one.

Patrick, for 200k, it had to be the original car, no?

If I'm not mistaken, Darrell was driving the "Coors Extra Gold" car when he crashed at Santa Pod in 1990. So, unless the Gwynn's had 2 Extra Gold cars that year, I'd say the car that was recently auctioned off had to be a replica.... since the original was destroyed in the crash.

Most of the BJ auction cars that benefit a good cause bring a ton of money, mainly because the buyer may treat it as a donation to the cause. If you notice, most of them bring way more than normal. And, it was my understanding the Ashley car was the actual deal--not sure about the driveline though.

I would think they had more than one car---and if memory served me correctly, hadnt Darrell sold the car he crashed to someone in Great Britian???

"Darrell Gwynn’s 1990 Coors Extra Gold top fuel dragster replica was sold and donated back twice to raise $410,000"

I just checked the auction site and they updated how much cash it brought in!!

Maybe it threw the rods out in the lights in the final. :D

I was at the auction with Darrell and Jerry and the car was a replica of the car we had in 1990, it was donated from Kalitta Racing and painted back to look exactly the way our car looked that year. The aution was very emotional for all of us as it was 20 years ago that Darrell last drove..
