Live Timing, NHRA and ESPN

Attention: Bandimere Speedway Live timing fans and viewers, Bandimere Speedway's Live Timing will not be operational for this weekend's Mopar Mile High Nationals. At an NHRA National Event, ESPN owns the rights to all the timing data and it broadcast availbility, making the use of Live Timing unavailable for the weekend of July 10th - July 12th. Live Timing will be operational again following the Mopar Mile High Nationals. Tickets for this weekend's Mile High National are available at the Bandimere Speedway gates or online at bandimere.com.

The Live Timing seemed to be working a moment ago.

I don't get it. If NHRA PAYS ESPN for the broadcast, then how could ESPN OWN anything????

edit: And it does seem to be shut off today.:(

Simple. They have a contract with ESPN to broadcast the events. I'm sure that contract gives ESPN exclusive rights to all kinds of things: video, stats, etc. I'm sure there's exclusion for the NHRA audiocast, but that's probably it. I'm sure ESPN is worried that people will watch the live timing and not the TV show.

not to mention the "if you take video pics etc, make non-commercial, non-public use of it" rule that's the first thing played on ACDelco.com Vision that people still don't understand and yet put vids all over youtube, thus sooner or later taking away our privileges to take video @ NHRA events. that's why I didn't put my nationals vids up from this year.

Meaning when the live timing was one of the additions to the new design this year, somebody had a brain fart about the rights to being able to use it. That is probably why halfway through this season, it is still not working. To save face, they will probably leave it on the site inactive, and when the site is next updated, will quietly disappear.

Bingo! Nailed it.
