Australian Top Fuel Champion Looks Forward To Securing Back-to-back Championships At Home

(Sydney, NSW) This coming weekend, Phil Read and the rest of the Jim Read Racing team will be looking to accomplish several things; however, none is more important than the aim of securing back-to- back Top Fuel championship titles.

"My hat is off to the entire team for the work they do when they're at the race track - and when we're back at the shop preparing for race meetings," said Phil Read.

"Not only am I focused on winning the championship; more importantly, I want to achieve that goal in front of a hometown crowd at our sponsor's event - the Snap-on Nitro Championships," added Read.

"Along with Auto One, Fuchs Lubricants, MTU Detroit Diesel and Wynn's, to win the Nitro Championships for your sponsor could not be better," said Phil.

Earlier this season, Phil further cemented his name into the nation's Top Fuel history books as the first Australian driver to ever record a 4.5-second pass on Australian soil - a 4.57 at the 2006 Boxing Day event at WSID. He then repeated this performance at the last race at Kwinana with a track record 4.58 second pass.

Crew chief, Bruce Read added, "If we can do it in Perth we can definitely do it here - and that's a fact that we've already proven."

Like his younger brother, Bruce also says that this championship is special for a number of reasons.

"Not only do we get to repeat the feat we achieved last year, we're going to get the chance to do it in front of our hometown fan base as well as our family and friends. The other very special thing about this second championship is that it will once again place the Read family in drag racing history as the only father-son duo to be able to achieve back-to-back titles," remarked Bruce.

Once again, Jim Read Racing will campaign a two-car team at this event with Martin Stamatis at the wheel of the second Top Fuel dragster.

"First and foremost I would like to thank Jim and the entire team for allowing me this opportunity. I have been granted a drive with the best Top Fuel team in the country and the way I have been welcomed in to the team only supports the statement more," exclaimed Stamatis.
Earlier attempts to complete licensing requirements were frustratingly hampered by rain. However, after having made several trips to Sydney from his West Australian base, Stamatis achieved his goal with a strong 4.85/290mph pass on Sunday, April 29.

"The wait was well worth it. I'm looking forward to this weekend to get some more experience except this time it's going to be in competition mode. I have to thank crew chief Rob Cavagnino and the entire team for making this possible for me," remarked Stamatis.

"I have absolute confidence in both of the Jim Read Racing crews this weekend and believe they can further show their dominance throughout the event this weekend. If all goes well Phil will have another gold Christmas tree to add to his expanding collection, as well as the 2006/2007 Australian Top Fuel Championship."

"Martin will definitely be able to repeat his strong licence performance and build on it from there," concluded team owner Jim Read.

Don't miss all the action this weekend, May 4 and 5, at the 2007 Snap-on Nitro Championships.
